Portuguese term

Cupuacu

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Food & Drink
Hi,

I found that it is either translated as "cupuacu" or as "white cocoa tree," but I would like to verify this.

The source text is a list of products and then there are descriptions and list of food products in which they are used.

This is a tree that belongs to the same family as the cacao tree. The fruit is renowned for its vitamin A, pectin, etc.

Thanks,
Patricia

Cupuaçu - do not translate

I would advise you not to translate this word.

It is spelt with a 'ç' cedilla, too.

My opinion - best of luck.

Cheers, Claudio. It's very common during the safra here in Belém, as you obviously know (and I love it btw).

Thanks, Amy :)
agree American_Transl : I never found an English word for it. On the other hand, my dictionary translated cajá as “hog-plum,” which is a word no one would know. So I’d use the Portuguese word, with an explanation, in such cases.

And it's certainly not 'white cocoa' !! The flesh is pretty similar (but tastier) and the stones (pips) are NOT chewable, but rock-hard, unlike cacau. Also, did you know that 'Cajá' is the name adopted in states like SP and RJ for the fruit 'Taperebá' ?
agree BLR : I also agree with Richard. Though from the same family, it is different to cocoa, which also yields a delicious white creamy pulp (so 'white cocoa' is very misleading)
