French term or phrase: fiction lourde
I have no context other than that this appears the bio of a cross-media marketing strategist:

"X débute sa carrière en chez XXX dans le programme de fiction lourde et crée, XX ans plus tard, son agence de communication interactive."

Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Thank you, Clanola. This fits best with the cross-media reference (which involves film, Internet and complementary media) and also with the descriptions I found in French, which suggest not only dramatic series but also documentary series, "dramedies" and one-off original films). I fell into the "lourde" as heavy/serious trap in my research but just couldn't get that notion to square with the descriptions of actual "fiction lourde" that I found in French. You solved the problem for me. For more on the genre, I found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_film.

-> Hmmm... Then why do you mention "The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Lost, Rome" in your own answer? Those are not 'literary' - and less still 'fiction lourde'.

neutral  Jennifer Levey: There is nothing in the question, as asked, to suggest that this refers to TV or the cinema: it's standard publishing-house jargon. // All? Not quite 'all' - how about those listed in my answer, for starters?

-> All google references for ''fiction lourde'' seem to indicate that this means ''téléfilm'' or ''téléséries''. But your google searches were for ''serious fiction'', not for ''fiction lourde''.

(serious) TV drama

Explanation:
Not necessarily a series, it could just be a one off TV drama, similar to a movie made for TV.
