Hi Cristina, María, Robert and everyone.
Coming from the UK, where everyone used to play the recorder in school, I didn't find this term so mysterious ( I didn't join in the discussion before, because it's been going on during the night for me!). I haven't suggested an answer because I can't find a term for it in Spanish. A common model of pre-recorder is the Suzuki Precorder (see http://www.suzukimusic.com/education/precorder/) , but it just doesn't seem to be marketed in Spain or Spanish America, though it is in Brazil. Hohner's Flutophone is very occasionally mentioned in Spanish-language sources, though I don't think it's quite the same thing. I don't believe they're used in Spanish schools; my kids started straight in with a normal flauta dulce (soprano recorder), and if you search for "flauta infantil" that's what you find, not this. So what do you put in your translation? Maybe just "flauta dulce", and leave it at that? Or perhaps "flauta dulce de iniciación" o "nuestra primera flauta"?
I mean, with the greatest respect for Robert's accurate answer, you're not going to put "Empezamos a tocar la flauta dulce con los agujeros levantados"!

Interesting discussion. Who was to know this was what a 'pre-recorder' meant?

Just found this information in Wikipedia, so one of you could use it to propose the right translation. It turns out that a 'recorder' as a musical instrument is a 'flauta dulce':

The concept still seems absurd as it implies pre-recording as opposed to practicing on how to handle a recorder.

Pre-recorders will be handed out in mid-october. These are "training" instruments that have raised finger holes so the child can really feel where they are.
