Sí, me llamo Eduardo. Usted me lo pregunta para entrar de algún manera en conversación, y eso puedo entenderlo. Pero usted hace mucho que me conoce, aunque de lejos. Como yo lo conozco a usted. Desde la época en que empezó a encontrarse con mi madre en el café de Larrañaga y Rivera, o en éste mismo. No crea que los espiaba. Nada de eso. Usted a lo mejor lo piensa, pero es porque no sabe toda la historia. ¿O acaso mamá se la contó? Hace tiempo que yo tenía ganas de hablar con usted, pero no me atrevía. Así después de todo, le agradezco que me haya ganado de mano. ¿Y sabe por qué tenía ganas de hablar con usted? Porque tengo la impresión de que usted es un buen tipo. Y mamá también era buena gente. No hablábamos mucho ella y yo. En casa, o reinaba el silencio, o tenía la palabra mi padre. Pero el Vijo hablaba casi exclusivamente cuando venía borracho, o sea, casi todas las noches, y entonces más bien gritaba. Los tres le teníamos miedo: mamá, mi hermanita Mirta y yo.
