English term

hamlet

English to Vietnamese Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Dear Colleagues,

I actually don't speak Vietnamese, but I'm translating into Russian customs documents where there is a Vietnamese address, and I’m not sure about the meaning of the word “hamlet”

Context: Kinh 2A Hamlet

And the documents also specify the commune/ward, the district and the province

I would appreciate it if you could provide a short explanation or a synonym in English. Does “hamlet” mean a village or a part of a city?

Discussion

Doan Quang Sep 16, 2013:
The asker does not need to know the meaning of "hamlet" in Vietnamese language but she/he is looking for a synonym in English and of course the "hamlet" refers to the "sub-unit of a village" even it is located anywhere in Vietnam.

Thôn (ấp) = sub-unit of a village

In general, the term "Hamlet" designates a geographical and administrative sub-unit of a village. By one account, there were 16,398 hamlets in Vietnam (as compared with more than 3,000 villages).

ấp

Translate it as Ấp Kinh 2A

Basically it's the smaller divisions that make up a commune.

A hamlet is a type of settlement. The definition of hamlet varies by country. It usually refers to a small settlement in a rural area, or a component of a larger settlement or municipality. Hamlets are typically unincorporated communities

ấp

Depending on context "hamlet" can be translated into a range of Vietnamese equivalents: ấp (in South VN), thôn (in North VN), bản (North VN Mountainous area), buôn (Central Highlands Ethnic minority groups), or phum (subdivision of Sóc- in Khmer residential groups in South VN).

In the context of the question it should be translated as "ấp", and the whole name should read: "Ấp Kinh 2A". See Notes below for explanation.
Notes:
1. "Kinh" is the South Vietnamese equivalent of "canal" or "canals", which are abundant in the Me Kong Delta, e.g.: ấp Kinh 2A, xã Long Định, Tỉnh Tiền Giang.
2. The North Vietnamese equivalent of "canal" is Kênh.

Based on the above context "hamlet" should be translated here as "ấp" instead of "thôn".
