Es geht um Untertitel für einen US-amerikanischen Film. Die Szene spielt in einem Solarium/Massagesalon, es geht offenbar um die Hintergrundmusik. Der Sprecher ist der Inhaber, ein junger Mann, der einen alten Bekannten herumführt und ihm voller Begeisterung alles zeigt

It’s pretty advanced, basically it’s 14 mega-jams of slaffee.
I was perfecting a different playlist every day, but then we got these Mexican dudes that would come in here and ***swamp the feel***.

Just had a thought: The verb you could add to your list is "ersticken" - after all, if you swamp it and drown it, you may as well suffocate it, too.

Was thinking of "You got the groove!" first and that kind of reminded me of the 70s...

I honestly don't know what Germans think when hearing Groove. I used to be very interested in the music industry, but I am no longer up to date.

What do you think about "vibe"? That's what you heard all around in the early 2000s.

groovy vs. groove Yes, groovy was a keyword in the 60s and 70s for womething that was good, soulful and/or exciting. Groove, however, is much older and relates to the ongoing movement in a piece of jazz music that allows the musicians and audience to fall into the music and sail away. It has been used in pop and soul as well. In the groove, moving along rhythmically like a record, lay back onto the music, unaware of anything but the music.

@Ramey Didn't they say "groovy" in the 70s or is it "in" again? Never know.

Could even suggest something totally different:

"Nachdem diese unmusikalischen Mexikaner da waren / nachdem diese Mexikaner mit ihren schrägen Beats hier waren, war Schluss mit lustig / war's aus die Maus / klappte nix mehr so richtig"

@Björn drown ist tatsächliches ein schönes Synonym für swamp. feel for the music passt auch, wenn man sich den Kontext ansieht: "Jeden Tag habe ich an einer anderen Playlist gearbeitet, aber dann kamen irgendwann immer diese Mexikaner und ich konnte mich nicht mehr auf die Musik konzentrieren."

Moin allerseits @Brigitte, yes, it is rather obscur and Björn's references to mechanics rings a bell. It also reminds me of the old expression "pulp the fiction".
I think we're going to have to create something that includes 'wässern' and 'Musik'.

I don't think "feel" relates to "Stimmung" but to "Gefühl für die Musik". swamp basically means "drown" here.

We're not talking about interior design but about beats and percussions. I have another word on the tip of my tongue, but I can't seem to remember, unfortunately.

Auch der Beleg, den Brigitte gefunden hat (siehe Link unten: *to swamp the feel for the life of …*) bestätigt den grundsätzlichen Sinn: "kaputtmachen, auslöschen". Die bildliche Vorstellung dazu: etwas ist ein Sumpf, in dem etwas anderes untergeht, versinkt.

and I get the impression that it could mean to interfere with, to superimpose, to dominate - but I freely admit that I've never seen or heard the expression before.

Geht es dir denn um die grundsätzliche Bedeutung oder um eine möglichst schöne Wiedergabe des Slangs?

*to swamp* = "überwältigen, zu viel sein für …", also vielleicht dann: sie haben "die Atmosphäre / die Stimmung / das Feeling" "plattgemacht/niedergewalzt/gekippt" …

Ziemlich frei übersetzt - trifft m. E. den Sinn. Es sei denn, die Dudes schießen den Laden gleich zusammen. Vielleicht ist das ja sooo ein Film?
