Translation v/s transliteration of technical terms
06:04 Apr 22, 2015
While selecting translation or transliteration (to be or, not to be!) one has to consider situation of end user. Would it be easy for end user to find related info on my translation? Or, it is more easy to understand term transliteration as it can be searched/referred to concerned people? For given term, it is medical term. Put provided translations on net. You won't get any info on what it means. but if you put transliteration, you may find something. NB: in fact provided transliteration here is not actual term in use. instead of नॉनरिसेक्टेबल if you try अनरिसेक्टेबल, you will see some more results. This all is bit fussy, in fact our job is to provide something easily traceable for end user, no matter it is translation or transliteration.
so what is the solution? I am being asked to close this question and honestly I am quite unsure what to select from a glossary point of view. Please provide feedback so that a suitable glossary entry can be made.
It is a common misconception that English is an easy language and is widely understood. Even native-speakers of English, who are not medical professionals, would not have heard of a word like resectable, let alone know what it means. Best translation is that which sticks to simple terms of the target language and that avoids source language terms as far as possible, as also difficult terms of the target language.
What is to say that the audience will understand trasliteration? Like Mr. Piyush said, he had to pick up a dictionary to find out what resectable means...
If your audience is native Hindi speaker, go with translation as they can guess the meaning from your given translation. But if your audience is 200 cr + i.e. Hindi knowing people across globe, better consider transliterating technical terms. This helps them to understand context clearly, perfectly.
Since this is a A RANDOMIZED STUDY TO COMPARE THE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF some drug, it is for medical professionals, who will understand Hindi+English option. The patients (assumed to be common people) need not bother with अनुच्छेदनीय, since they would be answering questions related to drugs, symptoms, allergies, usage, etc.
