German term or phrase: FiN
In a German medical report, physical examination of infant a few months old who has coughing and sniffles.

In the general physical examination section:
"...Augen reizlos, Pupillen isokor, Pupillenrk. prompt und seitengleich. FiN. HNO: Nase frei, TF bds. nicht einsehbar..."

The only part I don't understand is "FiN" It is written in exactly this way. Could be a typo, but I thought someone might have a good idea about what this abbreviation means.

agree  Anne Schulz: no bulging of fontanelle(s) // As Harald in the previous question, I have never heard "fontanelle within normal limits", but I found "fontanel(le) flat", or "AFSOF" (anterior fontanel soft, open, flat) as options including bulging and sunken fontanelles.

I totally agree with FiN meaning "Fontanelle im Niveau" in this context. As "Niveau" refers to "Schädel(decke)" ("im Niveau des Schädels") and as "within normal limits" could also refer to the fontanelle's size, closure vs. opening, etc., I would like to suggest a more specific (and idiomatic) English phrase.

  • A soft and flat fontanelle is normal. / Anterior fontanelle is open and flat.
  • Durch Palpation der Fontanelle wird festgestellt, ob diese im Niveau des Schädels, eingesunken oder vorgewölbt ist.
