now that you've provided some background, I realise that my initial interpretation of the situation between the two persons may have been wrong, and that my suggestions may have been leading in the wrong direction.
But you might have been a little less harsh in your judgement ("incorrect"), I was only trying to help you in a difficult situation which you claim yourself is impossible to solve reasonably in English. The Russian original is really vague and hard to define, which the contradicting contributions from Russian native speakers are a testament of.

Thank you to The Misha for your support -- I still think that the only possible solution in English is to keep it rather vague as to the actual relationship between the two people.
And I also support your attitude towards Valeria's closing the question without grading, as the question obviously cannot be solved conclusively, so at least Valeria could fork out a few points to someone for effort, even if she didn't get a definite, usable answer!

what's correct and what's "incorrect"? It is also, uhm, "impolite" to say the least to close without grading. I don't know about others, but next time you need help, you can count me out.

This conversation is a part of recorded statement for collision accident. The driver is not the owner of the vehicle, so an insurance adjuster asks him what is the relationship between the driver and the owner of the vehicle. Right afterwards they move on to how the accident happened. There is no way to even guess who baptised whom. And its incorrect to translate it as "we are related"

can you, Valeria, provide some more context about those two characters? From the wording it seems to me that the one who answers the question is stalling for some reason, which at first glance would tempt me to suggest something relatively vague like:

"We're related by family"
or
"We're family-related"

or even go as vague as

"we're related"

But some more context would definitely help in determining what the actual relationship is about!
