Buongiorno,

Spero che qualcuno possa aiutarmi, non cerco aiuto per una traduzione esattamente, ma più per capire il contesto di una frase (ed essere eventualmente in grado di redarre una nota)

Il testo:

Un anziano e ricco inglese, un conservatore, si sveglia al mattino e si accinge a leggere il giornale. Il libro è ambientato e scritto a inizio Novecento.

Il narratore dice:

“Having disposed of coffee, he was wont to read his letters, and the Morning Post, for he had always be a Tory, and could not stomach to pay a halfpenny for his news.”

Non riesco bene a capire questo riferimento alla preferenza del Morning Post e al costo di un half penny.

Ho letto che il Morning Post era un quotidiano conservatore e che a fine Ottocento, quando i giornali abbassarono il loro prezzo a un penny, fu l’ultimo a farlo.

Essendo Infatti l’uomo del libro un fiero “aristocratico” (non letteralmente ma di modi e, fino a poco prima, di mezzi) può essere che un halfpenny per lui fosse un costo troppo basso per un giornale e non il contrario.

Ciò nonostante non riesco ancora bene a capire cosa voglia dire la frase.

Spero qualcuno possa illuminarmi e grazie in ogni caso

Se qualcuno avesse eventualmente idea di dove potrei chiedere o cercare una risposta è anche bene accetto.

Forse si riferisce al fatto che il giornale era gratuito per gli iscritti ai Tory e quindi non sopportava l'idea di dover pagare anche un solo mezzo penny per leggere un altro giornale.
