This is from a declaration written by somebody from Honduras. It begins as follows:

Yo, Fulanito, con identidad XXXX-XXXX-XXXXX, vecino de la ciudad de X, Y, y residente en la ciudad de Z, departmento de W, por medio de la presente doy fe que....

My understanding of a "vecino de" a city is a resident of that city; however, in this context, there is a differentiation maybe between "vecino de" and "residente en". How do you differentiate between these two terms?

Phil, I fit into category 2 perfectly : ... owning a property and paying all the contribuciones but not qualifying for resident or nationality status. But this is in the Balearics, so don’t know how it compares with Honduras...

Really need to know the Honduran meaning. In Mexico, as Juan says, it generally means "residing in"; here it clearly can't mean that, unless "residente" has a different meaning in Honduras too.

Meanwhile, the RAE gives these somewhat mutually exclusive meanings:

"1. adj. Que habita con otros en un mismo pueblo, barrio o casa, en vivienda independiente. U. t. c. s.

2. adj. Que tiene casa y hogar en un pueblo, y contribuye a las cargas o repartimientos, aunque actualmente no viva en él. U. t. c. s.

3. adj. Que ha ganado los derechos propios de la vecindad en un pueblo por haber habitado en él durante el tiempo determinado por la ley. U. t. c. s."

In Menorca I qualify as a member of the ”asociación de vecinos” in the village where I own a small house; however, I have no residency status, and an definitely not a native nor was I born there or consider myself as being “from” there except during the summer months. So could it simply refer to a home owner, regardless of legal status concerning residency or nationality...?

I wonder if it means registered inhabitant - they live in one place but are registered in another. DRAE says

Que ha ganado los derechos propios de la vecindad en un pueblo por haber habitado en él durante el tiempo determinado por la ley.

I've asked a Honduran friend, just to be sure.

"Vecino" pareciera ser un sinónimo de "originario de".

Por ejemplo:

Hombre de 51 años, agricultor, casado, escolaridad primaria, originario y residente de San Juan del rincón, Estado de México. AHF. Padre vivo de 80 años, ...

As this is not the place where the person lives at the moment, it should be his place of origin.

neutral Wilsonn Perez Reyes : Normalmente, "vecino" se traduce como "resident", pero el problema es que en el documento de origen ya aparece "residente". Es decir, no debe usarse la palabra "residente" 2 veces. No tiene mucho sentido. Es redundante.

I'm answering this with zero knowledge of how individuals have to be described in Honduras legal documents
However, I see something very similar for Switzerland where it's necessary to first state the Canton of origin (registration), followed by the current place of residence. This is also the case for foreigners, where the country (and often the town) of origin is stated
