Explanation: In July 1900 we moved eastward, and one night Colonel Craddock sent for me with orders to take two men, one had a smattering of German, and the other was Dick Aldworth, a brave comrade from the first months of the conflict, to reconnoitre and find the enemy's fortress/garrison/citadel (a dangerous ride) with success, so that our regiment found it easy to take up the fight at the battle of Diamond Hill, and from the flanks we watched the magnificent charge of the 16th and 17th regiments of Lancers where their chief, the Earl of Airlie was killed. |
