ASM

English Other Education / Pedagogy
Practice I ASM
Practice II

A list of subjects in a certificate of university studies in Bulgaria. The person studied mainly mathematics, but I am not sure if this subject is related to mathematics. The certificate is translated from Bulgarian into English.

Discussion

Empty Whiskey Glass Oct 28, 2004:
Yes, that is what exactly it stands for.
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2004:
As a matter of fact one of the subjects in the list of 40 subjects was "Automated Calculating Machines". Could ASM be an abbreviation of that in Bulgarian?
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2004:
OK, it is the St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.
Empty Whiskey Glass Oct 28, 2004:
I know that the university is in Bulgaria. However, I need its name in order to examine the curriculum and provide you with the answer.
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2004:
The university is in Bulgaria and the person's major is mathematics studied at the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics.
Non-ProZ.com Oct 28, 2004:
Yes, the problem is that I have no more context than this. Your suggestion Advanced analytical methods could be quite probable. On the other hand it could be a Bulgarian abbreviation.
Empty Whiskey Glass Oct 28, 2004:
What is the university/institute in Bulgaria? Major?
Ian M-H (X) Oct 28, 2004:
With nothing more to go on we can only guess. Just the A could be so many things: advanced, analytical, additional, algebra(-ic), asymptotic (unlikely!!), applied... Advanced statistical methods? It could be (almost) anything.

neutral Eckhard Boehle : ok, but what's the reason for this suggestion? But what does the abbreviation stand for? That was my - important - question!

OK, being Bulgarian it is the easiest for me to decipher the abbreviation. Moreover, browisng my files, I came accross a supplement to diploma of higher education from the same university containing this major and subject.
disagree Michel A. : ASM ?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to all of you for your helpfulness! I have got many good suggestions. From the beginning I thought it was an abbreviation of an English expression, but after a lot of googling, research and thinking I am inclined to believe it is an abbreviation of a Bulgarian expression. Therefore I finally think Svetozar's suggestion is the most likely here."

American Society of Microbiology

disagree Ian M-H (X) : This can only be a (wild) guess.

disagree Eckhard Boehle : this is too wild a guess, no one can "study" an American Society in a Bulgarian university (Microbiology as a subject for Maths?)

Abstract State Machine

Beyond the Church-Turing definition of algorithms
In recent years the Church-Turing thesis has been subjected to several nontrivial revisions - not in the sense of refuting the thesis but in the sense of generalizing or refining it.

An approach initiated by Yuri Gurevich in the 1980s replaces the TM model with the more evolved abstract state machine (ASM) model. While abstract state machines yield the same class of algorithmically solvable problems as Turing machines, the ASM model has good claims to be a more direct formal counterpart of the intuitive notion of algorithm than the TM model is. This is an attempt to bridge the gap between formal models of computation and practical specification methods.

disagree Ian M-H (X) : Rather unlikely - certainly not confidence level 5

yeah, lots of possibilities, what one can study - but not "American Societies"
agree Michel A.

Alternating Sign Matrices

It is a specialisation subject in Mathematics. You will get a lot of hits if you used a science/maths search engine instead of Google. Here is a web site which gives a list of Maths search engines:

http://www.searchengineguide.com/pages/Science/Mathematics/i...

One of the results I got from there is given below:

http://www-math.mit.edu/~combin/abstracts/sep99/propp.html

Hope this helps.

I just found out that it can also mean \"Abstract State Machines\". Now you have a second answer!

Sorry, it is difficult to say which one applies to your question.
