Source text - Chinese 我对多媒体教学的兴趣源自小学四年级,那也是我第一次接触多媒体教学。那一年区里有一个命题的作文竞赛,题目是“我们的首都——北京”。可是我们都没有去过北京,不了解北京怎么写出深刻的关于北京文章呢?我的语文老师找来一盘介绍北京的录像带,借用会议室的设备播放给我们看。由于这一盘录像带,我写出了很生动的文章,获得了作文竞赛的二等奖。我觉得科技能拉近空间的距离,把遥不可及的东西呈现在眼前,非常有助于我们认识和了解一个陌生的东西。
我对教育的兴趣,却是源于我深感中国教育制度落后与不合理。落后在于,学业表现很好的学生,很可能是不能适应工作岗位要求的书呆子。我的表哥,是学校的高材生,年年都拿学业优秀奖学金,工作以后,由于不能适应公司环境、人际交往有障碍,得不到上司和同事的信任,导致苦恼消沉。不合理在于,高考制度的一试定成败。我的好朋友,平时成绩跟我不相上下,只因为高考失手,与心爱的大学失之交臂。这些都不是我愿意看到的。教育,应该是让下一代拥有积极适应生活适应社会的各种知识、素质和能力过程。我衷心希望能够找到这样一种互相分享互相传递知识、经验和技能的方法。
Translation - English My interest in multi-media education originated from my first experience of it when I was in Grade 4. There was a writing contest in our district, and the topic was “Beijing the capital”. It seemed an impossible mission for many of us since we had never been there before. However, our teacher helped us by playing a borrowed videotape of Beijing with project facilities. Thanks to that, I made a vivid description of Beijing in my writing and won a second prize. I should say that technology is such a miracle that it shortens distances, presents right in front of us things beyond reach and turns impossibility into reality.
However, my enthusiasm in education was developed from my concerns for Chinese education system. Comparing it to western education style, I may say it is outdated. Take my cousin as an example. He showed excellent academic performance in school and won scholarship every year. Unexpectedly, he turned out to be a total loser at work. He was in great distress as he could not accommodate in the new environment, had little communication with his workmates, and won little confidence from his boss. His experience reflected the fact that we paid too much attention on academic study whereas ignored other aspects in students’ development. Another story of my close friend from secondary school may well illustrate the injustice of our education system. She was also good at study and was considered as a competent candidate of her dreamed university. But she failed only because she did not do well in the decisive examination – NCEE. That is really a big shame for her and for our society. Education, in my mind, should be a process that provides students all-side knowledge and develops their competencies. Therefore, teachers are expected to possess the abilities of delivering as much as possible to help students become a valuable citizen when they grow up. As for me, all the facts and opinions well explained my motive in doing a further study in this course.
