שנה אחר כך, ב 1923, הפך היהודי היאנקי הרזה מניו יורק ללוחם השוורים היהודי והאמריקאי הראשון
בעולם. לתהילת עולם זכה בשל חברותו עם הסופר ארנסט המינגוויי, ש"התאהב" במטאדור היהודי הראשון,
לאחר שכבש גם את ספרד וצירף אותו לחבורתו הבוהמיינית והנהנתנית.
"אין בנמצא ספרדי אחד, שאי פעם ראה אותו בקרב, אשר יתכחש לאמנותיות ולמצוינות שלו", כתב עליו
המינגווי, "הוא היה מטאדור מוצלח יותר, מדעי יותר, אינטליגנטי יותר ומלוטש יותר מאשר כל המטאדורים
בספרד כיום למעט שישה, ולוחמי השוורים יודעים את זה ורוחשים לו כבוד עצום".
פרנקלין, שנוסף להיותו יהודי היה גם הומו שמעולם לא יצא מהארון, הוא אחד מ 19 ספורטאים יהודים
עטורי מדליות ותארים, מהמאה ה 18 עד קום המדינה, שסיפוריהם מוצגים החל מיום ראשון בתערוכה חדשה
במוזיאון בית התפוצות בתל אביב.
התערוכה, "משחק חייהם: הישגים ברוח ובספורט", היא ניסיון ראשון לשרטט דיוקן מקיף וחוצה גבולות
גיאוגרפיים, לאומיים וענפיים, של ספורטאים יהודים מצטיינים ברחבי העולם. היא נפתחת בתחילתה של שנה
שבה תתקיים אולימפיאדה (בלונדון) וימלאו 40 שנה לטבח הספורטאים הישראלים באולימפיאדת מינכן.
"לא לחינם שמעו רק מעטים על הסיפור המדהים של לוחם השוורים היהודי שכבש את ספרד", אומר אוצר
התערוכה, עיתונאי הספורט עדי רובינשטיין. "הוא לא התאים לדימוי הרווח של היהודי החלש ורפוי
השרירים, שקיבל מכות בגטו".
פרנקלין, לדבריו, היה יהודי מסוג אחר. "מנתץ מוסכמות. אחד שבחר לחוות חיים אחרים מאלה שיועדו לו
במסלול הדתי. אחד שכבש את העולם ואת לבותיהם של נשים וגברים כאחד". ככזה, הוא התאים למסר שביקש
רובינשטיין להעביר בתערוכה החדשה: "לא כל היהודים היו חלשים, כמו שמכרו לנו. היו בהם גם ספורטאים
חזקים, בענפים הקשים ביותר, שהיו סלבריטאים, שכבו עם כוכבות קולנוע מדהימות, השתתפו בפרסומות והיו
כוכבים בשמי ארצם".
רובינשטיין, בן 33 מתל אביב, למד לתואר ראשון בחוג להיסטוריה כללית באוניברסיטת תל אביב. כשביקש
לעסוק בהיסטוריה של הספורט גילה כי בישראל, המחקר בתחום הזה נמצא בחיתוליו. במשך שלוש שנים נבר
בארכיונים, נפגש עם מנהלי מוזיאונים ואסף מסמכים, עדויות וצילומים. את התוצאה הוא מציג בתערוכה
החדשה.
במוזיאון היהודי בקייפטאון בדרום אפריקה התפלאו לשמוע על העניין שהוא מגלה בשחקני רוגבי יהודים.
בדוכן בשוק פשפשים בפאריס מצא עיתון נדיר ומתפורר מ 1920, שאת שערו עיטרה תמונתו של ויקטור פרץ,
המתאגרף התוניסאי המצטיין בכל הזמנים, שהיה יהודי. מוזיאון השואה של פאריס סיפק לו צילומים נדירים
נוספים של פרץ. גם בארה"ב מצא חומר היסטורי מעניין. כשיעל זאבי, האוצרת האמנותית של התערוכה, היתה
בדרכה להופעה של בוב דילן בטקסס, היא נתקלה בדוכן לממכר עיתונים ישנים. כשנברה בערימה הופתעה
למצוא בה את החוברת הרשמית של האולימפיאדה שהתקיימה בברלין ב 1936. "זו חוברת נדירה, שאי אפשר
להשיג בשום מקום. הם כנראה לא הבינו מה יש להם ביד", אומר רובינשטיין.
בבודפשט הוא פגש עובדת של המוזיאון היהודי, שיצאה למסע בהונגריה בחיפוש אחר חומר על הספורטאים
היהודים המקומיים. המפורסם שבהם הוא הכדורגלן יוזף בראון (שכונה "צ'יבי"), שחקן במועדון הכדורגל
מ-ט-ק בודפשט, מהחשובים במדינה. בשנות ה 20 של המאה שעברה הוא היה גיבור לאומי בהונגריה והכדורגלן
היהודי הראשון שהתפרסם ברחבי העולם.
שמו של צ'יבי מוכר מאוד למי שגדל בישראל בשנים הראשונות לאחר קום המדינה, בעקבות הצלחתו של ספר
הילדים ההונגרי שנשא את שמו, שכתב אביה של חנה סנש, בלה סנש. הספר, שראה אור בהונגרית ב 1919 והפך
מאז לקלאסיקה, מספר על ילד עני שמפלס את דרכו לחברה דרך הכדורגל. ב 1950 הוא תורגם לעברית והיה
פופולרי ביותר בקרב בני נוער בישראל.
ספורטאי הונגרי אחר, השחיין אלפרד האיוש, היה היהודי וההונגרי הראשון בהיסטוריה שזכה במדליית זהב
אולימפית. בגיל 13 התחיל ללמוד שחייה תחרותית, לאחר שאביו טבע בנהר הדנובה. חמש שנים אחר כך,
ב 1896, כבר השתתף באולימפיאדת אתונה ¬ הראשונה שהתקיימה בעידן המודרני.
האיוש, שנולד בשם ארנולד גוטמן, זכה באולימפיאדה זו בשתי מדליות זהב והיה הספורטאי הצעיר ביותר
שזכה במדליה באולימפיאדה. כשנסיך הכתר היווני קונסטנטין שאל אותו בארוחת הערב הרשמית "איפה למדת
לשחות כך כך טוב?" השיב לו האיוש: "במים".
לצד היותו ספורטאי אולימפי מצטיין, היה האיוש גם אדריכל בעל-שם, שהשתתף בתכנון מתקני ספורט
אולימפיים בעולם. במיוחד נודע בבריכות האולימפיות שתיכנן. אחיו הצעיר, הנריק, זכה אף הוא במדליות
זהב בשחייה באולימפיאדה המיוחדת שהתקיימה באתונה ב 1906, לציון עשור למשחקים האולימפיים.

קצת יותר. האחים נילס והרלד בוהר, כדורגלנים יהודים מצטיינים ששיחקו בנבחרת דנמרק, זכו להישגים
מרשימים גם במדעים. הרלד, הצעיר בין השניים, זכה במדלית כסף באולימפיאדת 1908 עם נבחרת דנמרק
בכדורגל. כמה שנים לאחר מכן קיבל תואר פרופסור למתמטיקה. אחיו נילס, שהיה שוער בנבחרת, זכה בפרס
נובל בפיזיקה ב 1922.
"היום כבר אין כדורגלנים שמקבלים פרסי נובל", אומר רובינשטיין בחיוך. "פעם הספורטאים היהודים עוד
התקשו להתעלם מהסטריאוטיפ שקובע שלמרות הכל, השריר החשוב ביותר אצל היהודים הוא המוח".
מכ 200 ספורטאים יהודים מצטיינים שאיתר רובינשטיין, הוא בחר לבסוף כעשירית. הסינון לא היה קל,
לדבריו. "כשאנשים החלו לשמוע שאני חוקר את הנושא, הציפו אותי בפניות ובאימיילים. אחד טען שסבתא
שלו היתה אלופת העולם בפינג פונג. אחר סיפר על סבא שלו, שהיה מרים המשקולות הטוב ביותר בכפר אחד
בליטא. כולם, כמובן, היו הטובים ביותר בתחומם ¬ לא במחוז או בקולחוז ¬ אלא בכל העולם", הוא מספר
בהומור.
מי שזכו להיכנס לרשימה היו אכן הבולטים ביותר. אנשים כמו האנק גרינברג מארצות הברית, משחקני

בכל הזמנים. "איש לא הצליח להזיז שערה מראשו", כתבו עליו עיתוני התקופה. בצד היותו ספורטאי
מצטיין, היה לאונרד גם ציוני נלהב, שפרש את חסותו על המשלחת האמריקאית למשחקי המכביה.

מי שהצליח לשלב בין עיסוק אקדמי רציני לספורט הוא ההיסטוריון פרופ' משה צימרמן מהאוניברסיטה
העברית. ביום שני הרצה ביום העיון הנלווה לתערוכה. יום העיון, שארגן מרכז קבנר של האוניברסיטה
העברית, התקיים בבית התפוצות.
צימרמן מפנה אצבע מאשימה אל התנועה הציונית, שאחראית לדבריו לדחיקת דמותו של היהודי הספורטיבי.
"דווקא במקומותינו, בגלל הציונות, טיפחנו את הרעיון של 'יהדות השרירים', שטבע מקס נורדאו, ולפיו
רק הציונות תתקן את היהודי החלש", אומר צימרמן. "זה דבר שאין לו שחר. ליהודים הודבק דימוי שלא
מגיע להם. היהודי החלש לא היה תופעה כללית. היו ויש מספיק יהודים חזקים. אבל היהודים החזקים אינם
בהכרח ציונים. זה הפאנץ' ליין".
את התבלטותם של היהודים בענפי ספורט שונים, כמו אלה המוצגים בתערוכה החדשה, מסביר צימרמן בניסיון
להוכיח שהם חלק מהחברה. "האפשרויות של יהודים להשתלב היו באמצעות ספורט או כתיבת ספרות יפה בשפת
המקור", הוא אומר, "בגרמניה, למשל, הספורט איפשר ליהודים להראות שהם לא פחות טובים מהגרמנים
ושלמרות הכל הם נשארו יהודים-גרמנים", הוא אומר.

ב 1933 סילקו הנאצים את היהודים מאגודות הספורט השונות. "זה המקום האחרון שבו הם רצו לראות ארים
ויהודים יחד, גוף לצד גוף", מסביר צימרמן. אבל היהודים לא ויתרו על העיסוק בספורט, אפילו בתקופת
השואה. "השגשוג הכי גדול של אגודות הספורט היהודיות היה דווקא בתקופה הנאצית", כדבריו. "אמנם לקחו
להם את המגרשים ולא נתנו להם לשחק נגד קבוצות של ארים, אבל יהודים המשיכו לעסוק בספורט, ככל
שהתנאים איפשרו זאת".
הדוגמה הבולטת ביותר היתה במחנה טרזינשטאט, שם התקיימה ליגת כדורגל לנוער ולמבוגרים, שתועדה היטב
בסרט התעמולה שהכינו הנאצים על החיים במחנה. לפחות שלושה מהספורטאים שמתועדים בתערוכה נרצחו או
נהרגו בנסיבות שונות בשואה.

@טקסט:היו גם ספורטאים יהודים שגורלם שפר עליהם, חרף מוצאם. סיפורה היוצא דופן של הסייפת הלנה
מאייר מאופנבאך בגרמניה הוא דוגמה טובה. אביה של מאייר, אלופה אולימפית ואלופת העולם, היה יהודי.
בשל כך היא הוצאה ב 1933 מקבוצת הסיף שהיתה חברה בה, ונאלצה לעזוב את גרמניה לארה"ב. לקראת
האולימפיאדה שהתקיימה שלוש שנים לאחר מכן בברלין, הציעה לה גרמניה להצטרף למשלחת הגרמנית, כדי
היות מעין עלה תאנה ולהשתיק את הביקורת על רדיפת היהודים בגרמניה.
חרף מחאות של הקהילה היהודית בארה"ב ושל ספורטאים יהודים אמריקאים, היא נענתה בחיוב להצעה והתחרתה
באולימפיאדה. לאכזבת הנאצים היא לא זכתה במדליית זהב, אלא במדליית כסף בלבד. את הזהב והארד קיבלו
שתי יהודיות אחרות, מהונגריה ומאוסטריה. בטקס חלוקת המדליות לבשה מאייר מדים עם צלב קרס והצדיעה
במועל יד.
הצילום שתיעד אותה ברגע השיא שלה, שמבחינת רבים היה רגע של שפל, מוצג כעת, בהצנעה, בתערוכה החדשה.
"ברור לי שהאזכור שלה בתערוכה כזאת יעורר ביקורת, אבל התעקשנו להציג את הסיפור שלה חרף העובדה
שבישראל נוהגים להחרים אותה ולהתעלם ממנה. אנחנו לא מתיימרים לשפוט את המעשה שלה, אלא להציג את
סיפורה של הסייפת הטובה ביותר במאה ה 20, שהיתה חצי יהודייה", מסביר רובינשטיין.
התערוכה אמנם מסתיימת ב 1948, עם קום המדינה, אבל דווקא ישראל, שלפי התוכנית היתה אמורה למשוך
אליה את היהודים "בעלי השרירים", לא הוציאה מקרבה ספורטאים גדולים. "אמנם נחמד שיש לנו ישראלי
שמגיע למדליה בגלישה עם מפרשית, אבל הישגים גדולים ממש אין ליהודים הישראלים. בכדורגל, כידוע,
אנחנו טובים מאוד בפרשנות, אבל לא בלהגיע למקום הנכון", אומר צימרמן, שחקן כדורגל חובב שמדי פעם
גם מפרשן בטלוויזיה במשחקים של נבחרת גרמניה.

@TEXT:Sidney Franklin, born Sidney Frumpkin, left his Orthodox Jewish family in Brooklyn at age 18 after a violent quarrel with his father. Crossing the border with Mexico, he was captivated by one of the world’s cruelest and most dangerous sports: bullfighting.
A year later, in 1923, the thin Jewish Yankee from New York became the first American and the first Jewish bullfighter in the world. He attained world fame thanks to his friendship with Ernest Hemingway; the novelist was fascinated by the first Jewish matador, who had won the heart of the Spanish public. Hemingway, who admitted Franklin into his bohemian, hedonistic group of friends, writes, in “Death in the Afternoon” (published in 1932), that Franklin “is a better, more scientific, more intelligent and more finished matador than all but six of the full matadors in Spain today. The bullfighters know it and have the utmost respect for him. ... You will find no Spaniard who ever saw him fight who will deny his artistry with a cape.”
Franklin, who, in addition to being Jewish, was also a homosexual although he never disclosed that fact publicly, is one of the 19 Jewish athletes who, between the 18th century, attained Olympic medals or other prestigious honors and titles and whose stories are told in a new exhibition that opened last Sunday at Beit Hatfutsot – the Museum of the Jewish People. Entitled “The Game of Their Lives - Achievements in Spirit and Sport: Jewish Athletes prior to 1948,” the exhibition is a unique attempt to paint a comprehensive picture of outstanding Jewish athletes throughout the world, a picture that crosses geographic and national boundaries and which presents a wide range of different fields of sport. It is opening at the start of a year in which the XXX Olympic Summer Games in London will be held and which will also mark the 40th anniversary of the murder of the Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich.
“It is no coincidence that very little has been heard up to now about the amazing story of the Jewish bullfighter who captured the Spanish people’s heart,” says the exhibition’s curator, sports journalist Adi Rubinstein. “He just did not fit in with the commonly accepted image of the weak, puny Jew who always gets beaten up by the gentiles in the ghetto.”
According to Rubinstein, Franklin was a different kind of Jew: “He was an iconoclast who chose to lead a life that was far removed from what his Orthodox Jewish parents wanted for him. He captured the entire world as well as the hearts of both women and men.” Thus, he is a perfect example of the message that Rubinstein wants to convey in this new exhibition: “Contrary to what has been constantly drilled into us, not all the Jews in this era were weak. There were Jews who were strong athletes in the toughest fields of sport; they were celebrities, they slept with stunning movie actresses, they participated in advertisements and they were stars in their respective countries.”
Rubinstein, a 33-year-old Tel Avivian, studied toward an undergraduate degree in history at Tel Aviv University. Deciding that he wanted to specialize in the history of sports, he discovered that, in Israel, research in this field was only in its infancy. For three years, he viewed material in archives, met with museum directors and collected documents, testimonies and photographs. The present exhibition is the result of his research.
The people at the South African Jewish Museum in Cape Town were surprised to learn of his interest in Jewish rugby players. At a stall in a Paris flea market he found a rare newspaper that was literally falling to pieces. Published in 1920, it featured on its front page a photograph of Victor “Young” Perez, the greatest Tunisian boxer who ever lived and who was also Jewish. The Holocaust museum in Paris, La Mémorial de la Shoah or The Shoah Memorial, provided Rubinstein with additional rare photographs of Perez. In the United States, he also discovered fascinating historical material.
When Yael Zeevi, the artistic curator who designed the exhibition, was on her way to a Bob Dylan performance in Texas, she came across a stall specializing in the sale of old newspapers. Browsing through the pile of newspapers, she was astonished to find an official booklet of the Olympic Games that were held in Berlin in 1936. “This is truly a rare document, which cannot be obtained anywhere,” comments Rubinstein. “Probably, the people operating the stall did not realize what a find they had in their possession.”
In Budapest, he met a staff member of the Budapest Holocaust Memorial Center who was hunting throughout Hungary for material about local Jewish athletes, the most famous of whom was Joszef “Csibi” Braun. Braun played with Budapest’s MTK soccer club, one of the country’s leading teams. In the 1920s, he was a national hero in Hungary and the first Jewish soccer player to attain world fame.
His nickname, Csibi (pronounced Chibi), is very familiar to anyone who grew up in Israel in the first years after the country declared its independence in 1948. The reason is the success of a Hungarian book for children that was entitled “Csibi” and which was written by Bela Szenes, the father of the most celebrated paratrooper from pre-state Israel, Hannah Senesh (Szenes), who was parachuted behind enemy lines to assist partisan troops and was executed by the Nazis in 1944. The book, which first appeared in Hungarian in 1919 and subsequently became a classic in the field of children’s literature, tells the story of a poor boy who attains social status through soccer. In 1950, “Csibi” was translated into Hebrew and became a favorite among Israeli children.
Another Hungarian athlete, swimmer Alfred Hajos was the first Jew and the first Hungarian to ever win a gold Olympic medal. At age 13, he began to learn how to swim, after his father drowned in the Danube. Five years later, in 1896, he participated in the first Olympic Games in modern history, which were held, of course, in Athens.
Hajos, who was born Arnold Guttman, won two gold medals in Athens and was the youngest athlete to ever win an Olympic medal. When Crown Prince Constantine of Greece asked him at the official banquet where he had learned to swim so well, the young Olympian replied that he had learned this skill in the water.
In addition to being an outstanding Olympic athlete, Hajos was also a celebrated architect who took part in the planning of Olympic sports facilities throughout the world. He is especially known for the Olympic swimming pools that he planned. His younger brother, Henrik, also won gold medals in swimming at the special Olympics that were held in Athens in 1906 to mark the tenth anniversary of the first Olympic Games.

@TEXT:Alfred Hajos was not the only Jewish athlete to attain fame outside the field of sports in areas that a Jewish mother tends to be a little prouder of. The Bohr brothers, Niels and Harald, outstanding soccer players who played on the Danish national team, also made remarkable achievements in the field of science. The younger of the two, Harald, won a silver medal at the 1908 Olympic Games playing for the Danish national team. A few years later, he became a professor of mathematics. His brother Niels, who was goalkeeper on the team, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.
“Today, you never hear of soccer players who win the Nobel Prize,” quips Rubinstein. “Once upon a time, Jewish athletes had a hard time avoiding the stereotype that, despite everything, the most important muscle, as far as Jews are concerned, is the brain.”
Of the 200 outstanding Jewish athletes whom Rubinstein managed to track down, he ultimately chose only 19. The screening process was not easy, he admits: “When people heard that I was researching this topic, I began to be flooded by phone calls, letters and emails. One person claimed that his grandmother had been the world’s table tennis champion; another told me about his grandfather, who was the best weightlifter in one village in Lithuania. All of these athletes were, of course, champions in their field, not just in their district or their kolkhoz but in the entire world,” Rubinstein says, with a smile.
The Jewish athletes included in the exhibition are truly outstanding. Athletes like Hank Greenberg, an American Jew who was one of the greatest baseball players of all time and who refused to play with his team in a crucial game before the finals of the World Series in 1934 because the game was held on Yom Kippur. Another example is the story of Daniel Mendoza, who grew up in a poor religious Jewish family in 18th-century London and became England’s boxing champion. Mendoza is considered the father of modern boxing; he introduced the use of boxing gloves.
In the early years of the 20th century, several Jewish stars emerged in the field of boxing, a sport that traditionally attracted immigrants and members of minority groups from the lower socioeconomic strata. “After they were beaten up time and time again, these Jews learned how to box in order to defend themselves,” observes Rubinstein. “And then they discovered that they could actually make money from boxing.”
The most famous Jew in the boxing ring was Benny Leonard, born
Benjamin Leiner, of New York (1896-1947), who is regarded as the greatest Jewish boxer of all time. He used to boast that no contender could ever “muss” up his thick black hair. In addition to being a superb athlete, Leonard was a dedicated Zionist who sponsored the American delegation to the Maccabiah Games in pre-state Israel.

@TEXT:“I grew up with the idea that Jews are always the underdog, that they are short and very bad at sports. In general, the entire field of sports in Israel suffers from a poor image; sports are considered barbaric and athletes and fans are regarded as a bunch of loudmouths,” notes Rubinstein. “Of course, the field of sports is not regarded as an appropriate subject for serious academic research.”
One person who has managed to blend serious academic research with a love for sports activity is Hebrew University of Jerusalem historian Professor Moshe Zimmermann. Last Monday, he delivered a lecture at a one-day conference related to the exhibition. The conference, organized by the Hebrew University’s Richard Koebner Minerva Center for German History, took place at Beit Hatfutsot. Zimmermann blames the Zionist movement for the dismal status assigned to sports in Israeli society; he argues that the movement is responsible for the marginalization of the Jewish athlete.
“Here in Israel, because of Zionism, we nurtured the idea of
Muskeljudentum (‘muscle-Jewry’), a school of thought that was launched by Max Nordau and which maintained that only Zionism could solve the problem of the weak Jew,” explains Zimmermann. “This attitude was totally baseless. The Jews were stuck with an image that they simply did not deserve. The weak Jew was not a universal phenomenon; there were – and there are – enough strong Jews around. However, the strong Jews are not necessarily Zionists, and that is the punch line.”
In Zimmermann’s view, Jews became prominent in various fields of sports, as demonstrated by the outstanding Jewish athletes showcased in the exhibition, in order to show that they were part and parcel of their society: “The only possible ways for Jews to become integrated into society in the past were either sports or writing literature in the language of the country they lived in. In Germany, for instance, sports activity enabled Jews to show themselves to be just as good as other Germans and yet to remain German Jews.”
Sports activity also allowed Jews to strengthen their Jewish identity. Zimmerman: “Research studies have shown how, even in the smallest of communities, Jews attempted to preserve their Jewish identity through sports. You did not have to hold a Torah scroll in your hands in order to demonstrate that you were a Jew. You could also join a Makkabi club if you were a Zionist or a Magen club if you were an assimilating Jew.” Although the German community before the Holocaust numbered less than half a million, 40,000 Jews participated in some form of organized sports activity even during the Nazi period. “This is an impressive figure,” Zimmermann points out. “It proves that engagement in sports was a refuge for Jews in Nazi Germany.”
In 1933, the Nazis barred the Jews from the various sports associations. “This was the last place on earth where they wanted to see Jews and Aryans together, Jewish bodies alongside Aryan ones,” explains Zimmermann. However, the Jews were not prepared to give up their love for sports, even during the Holocaust period: “The most striking growth of the Jewish sports associations actually took place during the Nazi era. Although they were deprived of their playing fields and they were not permitted to compete against Aryans, they continued to engage in sports activity, as long as conditions allowed them to do so.”
The most dramatic example of this statement was given by the Theresienstadt camp, which had a soccer league for youth and for adults. The league was extensively documented in the Nazi propaganda film on the camp. At least three of the athletes featured in the exhibition were murdered or killed during the Holocaust.

@TEXT:There were also Jewish athletes who enjoyed a favorable fate despite their Jewish background. The unusual story of fencer Helene Mayer of Offenbach am Main, a suburb of Frankfurt, is a classic example. Although she was an Olympic and world champion, her father was Jewish and, in 1933, she was therefore forced to leave the fencing group she had been a member of and to leave Germany for America. Prior to the Olympic Games that were about to take place three years later in Berlin, Germany invited her to join the German delegation so that she could serve as the token Jew, thereby silencing the voices that were claiming that Germany was persecuting the Jews.
Despite the protests of both the American Jewish community and American Jewish athletes, she accepted the invitation and competed in the Olympics as a member of the German team. Much to the Nazis’ disappointment, she won only a silver medal, not the coveted gold. Ironically, the gold and bronze medals were awarded to two other Jewish female fencers who were from Hungary and Austria respectively. At the medals ceremony, Mayer, wearing a uniform adorned with a swastika, made the Nazi salute.
The photograph documenting her in the greatest moment of her career, which, in the view of many, was the lowest point, is presented at the exhibition, although it is not given excessive prominence. “Obviously,” notes Rubinstein, “her inclusion in the exhibition will arouse considerable criticism; however, we were adamant about presenting her story despite the fact that it is the general tendency in Israel to blacklist her and ignore her completely. We have no intention of judging her; we simply wanted to present the story of the 20th century’s greatest female fencer, who also happened to be half-Jewish.”
Although “The Game of Their Lives” ends with 1948, with the establishment of the State of Israel, the Jewish state, which, according to the Zionist program, was supposed to attract “muscular Jews,” has not produced outstanding athletes. “Even though it is nice to have an Israeli Olympic bronze medalist in windsurfing, Jewish athletes from Israel have not made any prominent achievements; in soccer, we are very good at commentary but we do not know how to get to the right place in that game,” says Zimmerman, an amateur soccer player who from time to time is also a television commentator for games where the German national team appears.
