Pecan Trees Spring of 2011?
I thinking about planting three pecan trees next spring. It says to plant them 40′ apart so I am going to two of them 20′ south of the northern property line and 40′ apart. The third will be 40′ from each of them as the point of an equilateral triangle. I think three trees will be enough nuts for my family.
Polyface Farm
MeetTheFarmer.TV has 3 segments on Polyface Farm with Joel Salatin. I loved his book Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal: War Stories From the Local Food Front. I like his way of doing things, but he is on several hundred acres. How do I scale it down to My 10 Acres I wonder? If I understood Joel in the video correctly he has 100 head of cattle that he moves to a different 1/2 acre section each day. This keeps the pasture in good shape. How do I do that with a single head and 10 total acres?
How can grazing heal land?
There are people that promote looking at land management as more of a whole system. In particular I am interested in how grazing animals can help the land. See http://managingwholes.com/grazing-heals-land.htm
However the challenge for me is how to apply this on just a few acres. I have read about Dexter Cattle, which is a smaller breed and thought of getting one. But even if I could create 3 acres of good pasture, I don’t think it would be enough to feed it for the winter so I would have to buy feed.
I’ve also considered a pig or a couple of goats. Goats would be ideal because they eat such a variety of plants, however fencing costs would be higher. It is jokingly said that if a fence can’t hold water it wont hold a goat. I understand that the problem can be reduced by moving the goats frequently to a new area.
Pigs tend to dig around which could be a good thing, creating areas for water to seep into the ground. The conventional wisdom is that pigs don’t eat grass, but there are those that have tried raising pigs in a pasture that contest this claim. Plus a piglet would be cheaper to buy than a Dexter calf.
I don’t think I will be able to put animals on this land until spring of 2012, so I have time to read up on things before I make a decision.
Property Description
This property has been vacant for decades. At some point in the past it was part of a farm, that was broken up into 10 acres lots sometime in the 70′s. The other lots have been all built on and several of them sub-divided. Across the street is a 500 house subdivision and there are several thousand houses within 1 mile.
The property dimensions are about 1/4 mile east-west and 350 feet north-south with the road on the eastern edge. There is a creek that comes from the north and crosses the property about halfway back, at the southern edge it turns east and flows along the southern edge out to the road.
Because of the drop in elevation down to the creek bed I have a south and west facing slope. There is about 3 acres of “high-ground” and the rest is “low-ground”. The high ground is grass that I mow several times a year. The low area is mostly scrubby brush plus a stand of planted pines.

Sin embargo, el reto para mí es cómo aplicar esto en los pocos acres que tengo. He leído acerca de una raza de ganado llamado Dexter, que es una raza pequeña, y he pensado en conseguir una cabeza de este tipo. I grew up in Michigan, U.S. In the year 2000 I graduated from Washtenaw Technical Middle College, a charter high school located on the campus of Washtenaw Community College. I received an associate's degree in general studies, and a computer technology systems certificate, along with my high school diploma. I later passed the CompTIA A+ certification exam.
In my teens I studied spanish at Washtenaw Community College, including composition, translation, and lab sessions for pronunciation. In my late teens I became fluent in spanish through association with the hispanic community in southeastern Michigan. In the following years I worked as an interpreter for various construction and janitorial companies. I was also trained for medical interpreting by the University of Michigan Health System.
In my mid twenties I moved to the Dominican Republic, and have lived here for several years. In 2008 I attended the seventeenth class of the Escuela de Entrenamiento Ministerial (Ministerial Training School) in the Dominican Republic. The class was taught in spanish, the curriculum included detailed study of the Bible, training in teaching and public speaking,and other related subjects.
Currently I teach english as a foreign language at an extension of the Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano, the oldest english language institute in the caribbean, and one of the most prestigious. My wife is a native speaker of spanish, has a degree in education, and has over ten years of experience as a teacher. She specializes in artistic education, has taught several different grades, and has always taught in spanish-speaking schools.
I am an avid reader of english and spanish, and my love of literature has made me appreciate the importance of precise expression in written communication. My extensive reading, the experiences of my wife and myself in the educational field, and the contact I've had with different cultures, have given me an excellent command of english and spanish, including grammar and spelling.
