When photography was invented (1839), it was based entirely on black and white images. However, even back then photographers wished to imitate painters and create color images; a task which proved to be quite difficult, because it was only twenty two years later, in 1861, that James Clerk Maxwell presented the first color image in London. The color image was projected in front of a crowd on a white screen in a dark hall, using three projectors. Each of the projectors had a filter with a different primary color, in accordance with the additive color method. The photographic object – a multicolored tartan ribbon – was photographed in three consecutive photos. The first photo was taken through a blue filter, the second through a green filter, and the third through a red filter. The plates were developed to produce three black and white negatives, which were then were copied onto other photographic plates, resulting in three positive black and white slides. These slides will be referred to as the blue slide (that is, the slide copied from the negative that was photographed through the blue filter), the green slide, and the red slide. Each of the slides was inserted into a separate projector; then the images were projected, on the screen, each through the projector through which its negative was photographed. All of the images were superposed one on another, resulting in an impressive color image , which astonished all its viewers.
Maxwell's experiment, therefore, was carried out using two stages: during the first stage, the color topic was separated to its colors, by photographing through three filters: blue, green, and red; after the plates were processed, the second stage entailed projecting all three slides, superposed on one another, to create the color photo. These are the two basic stages in each method used for creating a color photo, and are therefore referred to as color separation of colored analysis for the first stage, and color synthesis for the second stage.
A simple experiment can help us understand better the meaning of color separation. Begin by coloring color a white paper with large squares of different colors. Then darken the room and light the color squares using a slide projector, on which a blue, or a green, or a red filter is projected alternately. When projecting a blue light on the color squares, we will find out that our eye notices only the blue square and other colors with a blue ingredient (blue-green and blue-red), while the rest of the colors are totally invisible; when projecting a green light we will see the green square, the yellow square (which is combined of green + red), and the blue-green square – that is, the colors with green ingredient; and when projecting a red light we will see the red square, the blue-red square, and the yellow square – that is, the colors with the red ingredient. In fact, the color film sees almost exactly what our eye sees, and so separates the colors of the photographic object by photographing the object separately through the three filters, just like our eye saw through each filter of another color.
Maxwell's experiment, therefore, demonstrated that obtaining a color photo is possible in principle. However, as the method used by Maxwell was highly cumbersome, this experiment definitely did not outline a practical method for color photography.

Zal hij de koffie inruilen voor de handel in mensen? Het is ver voor de officiële afschaffing van de slavenhandel in 1814, morgen precies tweehonderd jaar geleden. Wat waren de economische motieven voor zo’n man om in Afrika tot slaaf gemaakte mensen met z’n duizenden opeengepakt naar de Amerika’s te verschepen?

Slave trade could produce a lot of money
Researchers specializing in the economy of the Dutch slavery say that slave trade was an extremely risky business. “The slaves could revolt, resulting in the loss your investment. As a supplier of cheap work, the slave trade was a major catalyst of the world economy. However, in itself it was a relatively minor line of business. According to the researchers' calculations, the yield of the slave trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries totaled between 63 and 79 million gulden. In current monetary terms, the Netherlands' profit from the slave trade amounted to approximately 700 million Euro. This figure is higher than what historians thought earlier, but marginal in comparison with the total East-Indian trade, which made an easy profit of 300 million Euros each year.
The Dutch shipped hundreds of thousands of slaves
Based on the most reliable estimations, European traders shipped approximately 12.5 million slaves to the American continent: the most massive forced immigration in history. The Netherlands had a relativley small share in this tragedy. According to the most widely used estimations, the Dutch Republic was responsible for the shipping of about 550,000 men. About a decade ago, in a casual conversation with an elderly Arab intellectual, I expressed my frustration that governments in the Middle East had been unable to liberalize their economies and societies in the way that the East Asians had. “Look at Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul,” I said, pointing to their extraordinary economic achievements. The man, a gentle, charming, erudite, and pro-Western journalist, straightened up and replied sharply, “Look at them. They have simply aped the west. Their cities are cheap copies of Houston and Dallas. That may be all right for fishing villages, but we are heirs to one of the great civilizations of the world. We cannot become slums of the West.”
This sense of pride and fall is at the heart of the Arab problem. It makes economic advance impossible and political progress fraught with difficulty. America thinks of modernity as all good – and it has been almost all good for America. But for the Arab world, modernity has been one failure after another. Each path followed – socialism, secularism, nationalism – has turned into a dead end. People often wonder why the Arab countries will not try secularism. In fact, for most of the last century, most of them did. Now people associate the failure of their governments with the failure of Secularism and of the Western path. The Arab world is disillusioned with the West when it should be disillusioned with its own leaders.
The new, accelerated globalization that flourished in the 1990s has hit the Arab world in a strange way. Its societies are open enough to be disrupted by modernity, but not so open so that they can ride the wave. Arabs see the television shows, eat the fast foods, and drink the sodas, but they don’t see genuine liberalization in their societies, with increased opportunities and greater openness. They don’t see economic opportunities and dynamism, just the same elites controlling things. Globalization in the Arab world is the critic’s caricature of globalization, a slew of Western products and billboards with little else. For the elite in the Arab societies it means more things to buy. But for some of them it is also an unsettling phenomenon that threatens their comfortable base of power.
This mixture of fascination and repulsion with the West – with modernity – has utterly disorientated the Arab world. Young me, often better educated than their parents, leave their traditional villages to find work. They arrive in the noisy, crowded cities of Cairo, Beirut, Damascus or go to work in the oil states. (Almost 10 percent of Egypt’s working population worked in the Gulf states at one point). In their new world they see great disparities of wealth and the disorientating effects of modernity; most unsettlingly, they see women, unveiled and in public places, taking buses, eating in cafes, and working alongside them. They come face to face with the contradictions of modern life, seeking the wealth of the new world but the tradition and certainty of the old.
Globalization has caught the Arab world at a bad demographic moment. Its societies are going through a massive youth bulge; more than half of the Arab world is under the age of twenty-five. Fully 75 percent of Saudi Arabia is under the age of thirty. A bulge of restless young men in any country is bad news. Almost all crime in every society is committed by men between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five. Lock all young men up, one social scientist pointed out, and violent crime will drop by more than 95 percent. (That is why the socialization of young men – in schools, colleges, and camps – has been one of the chief challenges for civilized societies.) When accompanied by even small economic and social change, a youth bulge produces a new politics of protests. In the past, societies in these circumstances have fallen prey to a search for revolutionary solutions. France went through a youth bulge just before the French Revolution in 1789, as did Iran before its revolution in 1979. Even the Unites States had a youth bulge that peaked in 1968, the year of the country’s strongest social protests since the Great Depression. In the case of the Arab world, this upheaval has taken the form of a religious resurgence.
