Russian to English: Эволюция дизайна детских журналов в России (отрывок) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English The socio-political situation in Russia after the revolution created conditions for significant changes in the realm of design. Artists challenged the artistic canon of the past and participated in the creation of a new society and a new art. Two educational institutions, VKhUTEMAS and VKhUTEZh, played a significant role in the development of Soviet design, which was influenced by the avant-garde movements – abstractionism, suprematism, and constructivism. The main characteristics of Soviet periodical design were a focus on social issues over commitment to beautiful illustrations, free-form style, quick and loose illustration techniques, sparse use of color, simple and sketch-like illustrations, and the use of photography as a form of illustration (including the use of photomontage and collage to combine various photographs). Soviet illustration became one of the primary means of ideological and aesthetic education, as children’s periodicals affirmed a social and constructive conception of childhood in which children participated in the Communist movement.
