Rehabilitation Medicine Improves the Health Outcomes of Chronic Diseases & Quality of Life
Content
Rehabilitation is a set of interventions needed for a person with limitations in everyday functioning due to aging or a health condition, including chronic diseases, injuries or traumas. Rehabilitation enables individuals of all ages to maintain or return to their daily life activities. It’s an essential component of universal health coverage along with promotion, prevention, treatment and palliation. Rehabilitation is a highly person-centered health strategy which is performed either through specialized rehabilitation programs or integrated into other health programs and services.
Physical therapy
Physical therapy is an independent branch of medicine for physical functions, activities including behavior. It includes treatment and prevention of disease, reduction of damage or inability. Therapy is performed by the physiotherapist or multi-professional team for patients with functioning disorders after acute diseases or injuries.
After careful examination of the patient, therapeutic aims are set and appropriate therapy methods acceptable for the patient are selected together with the patient.
In order to assess physical and functional conditions of the patient, a physiotherapist uses different assessment methods in his or her work. During the treatment process both active and passive therapy methods will be used. The active method which contains specific active exercises prescribed by the physiotherapist will have to be performed independently. However, there are also other several treatment methods. The main methods involved in the therapy are ultrasound, Amplipulse therapy, Microwave therapy, Magnet therapy, Darsonvalization, Laser therapy and massage.
Those activities cover health promotion and prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, as well as adiposity. Moreover, physiotherapists can also successfully operate in promoting the health of pregnant women and young mothers, as well as harmonious development of children.
Self-management support and disease management also plays important role in Rehabilitation Medicine. This process comprises health education regarding the disease process and symptom management, smoking cessation, nutrition, psychological support, supervised progressive exercise and advance care planning. These activities help to improve the patients’ physical, psychological health and quality of life as well as support positive behavior change.
Self-management involves the person, with their family or carers, engaging in activities for health, managing their signs and symptoms, monitoring behaviors and managing the impact of their conditions. Yet, the adoption of healthy behaviors and extent of self-management is dependent upon the person’s capacity, motivation and life context.
Furthermore, self-management approaches can assist the individual to identify and manage symptoms of their conditions, such as fatigue and shortness of breath.
Strategies to identify the self-manage symptoms can increase the individual’s knowledge of the condition, their confidence and coping ability, and can assist in avoiding or preparation of further exacerbation.
Benefits
It is obvious that rehabilitation can reduce the impact of a broad range of health conditions, including acute and chronic diseases, disorders, injuries or trauma. It can help to minimize or slow down the disabling effects of chronic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, cancers and diabetes by equipping people with knowledge and self-management strategies. Thus, rehabilitation is an investment, with cost benefits for both individuals and society.
