Since 2015, when I moved back to Portugal I have been working at home (an apartment in the centre of Lisbon) where I have a very calm and quiet office with everything I need to work. When I was living in Brussels, I had a separate office for a few years but then when my youngest daughter left the nest I decided to use her room as my office. | | | Home now, office before | Nov 8, 2023 |
I can't imagine working in a busy, noisy environment, but everyone's different. | | |
Ever since I quit my last job and decided to work 100% as a freelancer, I have worked exclusively at home. This has become even more pleasant since we moved into our own house with the basement office/"mancave" I have always dreamt of.

It was hard to resist the temptation. So here it is:

At home. I don't know why but a lot of people have suggested going to a co-working place. I don't get it: there are so many perks to working at home. I can quickly hang up my laundry while my coffee is brewing, I don't need to brave the elements to go to work, no chance of my laptop being stolen, no need to make conversation with whoever might be at the place. My dog and I keep each other company. He didn't get on very well with his previous owners who were out a lot (students who worked evening... See more At home. I go to a co-working precisely to make conversations. Laptop can’t be stolen, there are cameras and security card keys, it’s not a place anybody can walk in, just people who have signed up and paid a fee.
I can use their kitchen, there are fruits, snacks, coffee machine and all utilities.
Another benefit is that there are people from other fields I can collaborate with or learn from.

Does Outdoors mean my own balcony or a tent deployed at end of a hiking trip?
What is the difference between "office with the colleagues" and "coworking space?" What is a coworking space then? An in-house project?
How much money can a professional who supposedly works "usually" at the cafe make? Meaning that a profession is a way to put enough bread on the table. Everything else is a hobby.

I believe being in a tent is like being outdoor, it qualifies. Balcony is OK too, but pretty limited.
I am not sure about cafes, I never do that, loud music, no equipment, no desk, can’t stay in it for long.
Office with colleagues = you all do the same job/same project, you have a boss and strict structure and strict time for breaks, etc. You need to come for work every day, justify no-shows, I mean I could be listing differences forever. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Where do you usually work?
