French term

défoncer de nouveaux marchés

French to English Bus/Financial Music Profile of a female candidate for a business award
This is a profile of a woman entrepreneur in Canada. She runs a company specializing in managing and promoting the careers of francophone musical performers. "Nous avons défoncé de nouveaux marchés pour l'industrie de la musique francophone canadienne qui ont permis à nos artistes de connaître un succès international."

Perhaps something along these lines: "we have worked tirelessly to open up new markets for Canadian francophone music..."

broken into OR opened up new markets

Maybe the first is a little stronger than the original, so perhaps the second might work better?
Peer comment(s):

agree Sandra C. : I like broken into, as "défoncer" is quite a strong word in French :-)// Actually, I myself find the use of défoncer a little odd in this context...

Thanks, Sandra! That's kind of the way I saw it too, but I wasn't sure of the register, not being a native speaker.
agree RHELLER : broke into

Thanks, Rita!
agree David Vaughn : Not sure if all Canadiens are défoncés? "Broken" seems like a good choice, but I wonder if there might be a play on words going on? These kind of speeches are sometimes joke-ridden. Some Canadian input would be useful.

Thanks, Vaughn! // I did wonder, but it's beyond my level... At any rate, suggests to me quite a degree of 'aggressiveness' in their approach...
agree Nick Lingris : Agree with Sandra and Rita.

agree lokilo : This and Enza's answer both work. Guess it depends the audience.

stormed into new markets

Not because I think it's necessarily better but simply for the register.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I would have felt that 'stormed' had too much of a connotation of 'angrily' about it, but from the examples you've quoted, it seems that is not the case; I suppose we're in the 'post-Desert Storm' era now....
21 mins
yes, well as Sandra said, the register is a little strange in French too :-)

smashed into / crashed into new markets

To retain the idea of 'enfoncé'
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Except it's 'défoncer'? Don't you think this sounds just a bit as if they did it clumsily, 'bull-at-a-gate' fashion?
13 mins
Possibly... I was thinking along the lines of 'crashing a party' kind of thing... To me, 'defoncer' evokes the idea of ramming into something. Perhaps it's different in Canadian French?
