夹宣画 painting on 2-ply xuan paper Explanation: Jiaxuan differs from a regular single ply xuan in that a sheet (of 夹宣) is made thicker by meshing two layers of pulp together. This is accomplished by scooping up the pulp twice in the pulp sink with the mesh (usually made of fine bamboo strips). This kind of xuan paper is more absorbant and good for very expressive brushworks. However, it also makes it possible for unscrupulous (and skillful) art dealers to split a valuble painting into two by peeling off one layer from the other for more profit. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs 37 mins (2005-11-02 20:27:43 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Well, the above explanation is right 99% of the time. The other 1%? Starting from the 1970s, a local paper maker in Sichuan Province started to market his products, a much inferior product than those made in Xuancheng of Anhui (安徽宣城). And the city where the Sichuan manufecturer is located is called Jia Jiang (夹江 or town between two rivers, which they have lots). And the first character (夹) for the name of the town happens to be exactly the same as that of the genuine 夹宣 product from Anhui. This made things complicated. But most artists or dealers will use the full name of 夹江宣 (Jiajiang xuan) for the Sichuan product to differenciate from the genuine products which is reputably known as 徽宣 (Hui xuan). Hui is for Anhui, when the quality of paper the artwork is on becomes a matter of concern, to separate it from rice papers produced elsewhere.
