Romanzo ottocentesco inglese. Viene raccontata la storia di un pastore protestante e dei suoi curati:

His curates threw off as far as they could that zeal which is so dear to the youthful mind but which so often seems to be weak and flabby to their elders.

La mia proposta:

I suoi curati si liberavano per quanto potevano di quello zelo che è così caro alle giovani menti ma che sembra spesso debole e fiacco ai loro superiori.

Potrebbe essere uno dei ministeri (Apostoli, Vescovi, Profeti, Anziani, Diaconi ed Evangelisti) citati dall'Apostolo Paolo nella 1° epistola a Timoteo. Anziano è sinonimo di Presbitero e in molte chiese protestanti ha funzione di Pastore.

Explanation:
Siccome prima si parla di "youthful mind", non credo che dopo ci si riferisca a persone così avanti nell'età come degli "anziani" o degli "antenati". Semplicemente, l'eterna contrapposizione fra giovani e adulti.
