Law/Patents - Law (general) / testimonio en una demanda para la patria potestad de una niña
Spanish term or phrase: "Colita"
I am translating testimony given by a four-year-old girl who states that her father "le lastimó la colita" and I am not sure whether she is referring to her "bottom" or to her genitalia.

I will quote from the testimony, given in a case in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:

"... dijo que su papá le había lastimado más cuando le tocó su colita, y entonces, para ratificar, le preguntó nuevamente que cómo es que su papá le había lastimado su colita, y ella le dijo que con el dedo, y señaló el dedo índice derecho, a lo que preguntó que cómo, y abrió las piernitas, señaló su ZONA DE LA COLITA, agregando que ese día ya se iban a la playa..."

From there on there is no specific reference to the event, but only the mother's consternation on learning what had happened...

"colita" seems to refer to her "bottom", but I am not sure if she might be referring to her genital region, and this seems like an important point.

I wonder if anyone has more experience with the word "colita" and what it might refer to? I realize it's a delicate matter, but I could use the benefit of fluent Spanish-speakers.

Gracias...

In Mexico at least. As the father of my 18 year old daughter, I learned this from her Mexican mother, who would tell her to "limpia tu colita", even when she only had a number one

The word colita means literally, "Little Tail".

In the song, "Hotel California", the Eagles band is referring to, "the warm smell of Colitas rising up though the air". In this sense, the Little Tails, or tips of the marijuana plant, and of course the most potent part.

I hava also heard the term colita reference a person's butt or a woman's private parts.

One of the main reasons you are supposed to call a child's private parts by their proper name (e.g. vagina, penis) is to help eliminated confusion if - God forbid - your child should ever become a victim of sexual abuse. When a detective or CSP worker interviews your child, using the correct term will help facilitate the interview and cut down on the possibility of your child's interview being thrown out in court because of confusion over what part is called what. I realize this is not a popular concept, but child abuse exists and we, as parents, need to make sure we give our kids as much ammunition as possible without scaring them. My ex-boyfriend was a detective with Juvenile Abuse dept, and I'm a counselor working primarily with children involved in CSP and foster care. I have seen too many times what can happen if ANYTHING goes wrong in a child abuse case. Don't wait until the child is older to teach proper terms - the abuser certainly won't wait.

BTW, we would also tell my daughter "limpia tu colita" when she had a number two, but in this case I'm pretty sure it refers to her genitalia as per Helen's comment

One last comment if you are convinced that it does refer to her genitalia, is that you might want to use an equivalent child's name for her genitalia and place a more formal term in parenthesis. There are plenty of mother-baby sites where they discuss these nick names

I lied! But this will be my last comment. I should have posted the above for reference purposes rather than as an answer, as my point was to clarify Bob's doubt as to whether or not "colita" refers to the genitalia. So again, I would choose a nick name with genitals or vagina in brackets.

IMO, I don't think including "female" in the translation will do any harm. It is a delicate situation and I think it's important not to be less or more ambiguous as the Spanish version, and if "colita" is clearly her genitalia then this needs to be reflected in English, and the use of "female" should help clarify this.

Notes to answerer
Asker: You've been very helpful, and your suggestions are very valid. It seems to me that "colita" could only refer to a girl's private parts, and that I should include the word "female" in the translation. Do you agree with that?

agree  Helena Chavarria: Unfortunately, I think you're right. If the little girl had wanted to show her bottom, she would have twisted around and put a hand behind her body, and not spread her legs.

  -> Yes; thank you, Helena

agree  Christine Walsh: 'private parts' seems like a good solution to me. It keeps the slight level of indefinition of the original, but I agree with your interpretation too.

agree  Charles Davis: I see your first post was first, and this must be right. The difficult part is to find a widely-used children's word in English (see Guardian article). In Spain, by the way, a "colita" is called a "chichi". I like "partes nobles".
