It's not something I keep track of. Basically, I have two working categories, which I designate 'revision' and 'translation'.
The former refers to texts I have been sent by the authors for correction/revision/tweaking/improvement, and nowadays they are obviously using MT software to prepare their texts, so I suppose you could call it PEMT. And the latter simply refers to texts sent to me for direct translation.

All my clients are direct, and I don't recall the last time I worked with an agency, it will be at least a few years now... ▲ Collapse | | | Novian Cahyadi אינדונזיה Local time: 00:59 חבר (2024) מאנגלית לאינדונזית [rubs hands in anticipation] | Jan 27 |
Oh, boy! Can't wait to see people fighting over this. 🐶
I took on a couple of PEMT jobs last year, but I imagine the number will increase this year. I've been fortunate enough to hold off on accepting such tasks, but I think this will become the new normal within a few years: client doesn't require top quality and wants it cheaper = PEMT + human review.

Or people are so sick and tired over these questions that only seem to be there to invoke some heated debate about machine translation, that they prefer to no longer react.
I know what MTPE is worth for my business and I'm perfectly fine with people that don't want to come anywhere near it. I would even say: the more, the better for me. | | | Liena Vijupe לטביה Local time: 19:59 חבר (2014) מצרפתית ללטבית + ...
For one particular client (an EU institution) it is probably the same when converted to my hourly rate. It varies per project, but in general I do not spend more time on it than I have given myself based on the total PO amount and I only fix major issues.
For everybody else I either reject PEMT jobs or quote my usual translation rate and explain that I do not take full responsibility of the quality when forced to use MT. I took on a couple of PEMT jobs last year, just to know what it meant work-wise. The first project (IT/PT) went smoothly and it took me more or less half the time it would need translating. The second project (FR/PT) was less positive and it took me circa ¾ of the time required to translate. So, let’s say that If I had projects lined up one after the other as I used to have years ago, PEMT would bring the same income with less effort, but the reality is that after Covid projects have become r... That's why MTPE is usually paid 2/3 of your translation rate. Good MT can also take less, as you said. So depending on the agreed rate, it can bring same or more income than regular translation.
If MTPE takes more than that, then the engine used for machine translation is not suitable for the content. The best results are only achieved with trained neural engines, neither LLM are suitable for translating large content. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: In general, do PEMT jobs bring you more income or less than regular translation jobs?
