There should also be... Jan 27

...an option: All of the above./Some of the above. Because there are mixed factors which have affected our work worldwide.

Some long-time clients disappeared completely and others cut back on their requests for translation services enormously. I have not been able to replace them with new customers. AI and MTPE have drastically reduced work volumes. Company and translation agency mergers and acquisitions have also played a role as they look to reducing costs and contracting lower-priced suppliers who may or may not deliver the same quality. I think political instability, a stagnant economy and an outdated economic structure in Germany are causing a downturn in my particular main language pair and specialisations. This is the first time in around twenty years I have to start thinking about another source of income, which is difficult when you are approaching retirement age.Collapse

The economic situation in Germany is particularly challenging and I would have been very surprised if there had been no impact on translation. How could there not be, given that sentiment among the companies that are our ultimate clients is so weak?

The Japanese economy is in not in great shape - inflation has become a major issue after a couple of decades of deflation - but it is not a disaster zone either. Not sure what is happening in my corner of JP-EN. My order volume in December was parlously low, and while it has recovered in January it is still fairly quiet. Things are looking difficult.

Regards,
Dan

None! Jan 28

None of those 'factors' affects my 'work' in any way at all, because I withdrew from the rat-race some years ago and my entire income, in the form of pensions earned in the 20th Century, is now affected mainly by exchange rates and inflation in three countries on the other side of both the Atlantic and the equator.
If the comments from many contributors to this thread (and many threads here on Proz and elsewhere...) it seems I got out of the translation market just in the nick of time... See more

Inflation has been there indeed Jan 28

And I'm the kind of person who never asks for a pay rise (I'd rather change the employer), so there. Still doing okay financially. Generative AI doesn't stand out from the ranks of other MT engines, at least not in my pair. Young professionals = yesterday's students who can't really accomplish anything but want to earn like grown-ups. Non-professionals = no competition. Generative AI doesn't stand out from the ranks of other MT engines, at least not in my pair. Young professionals = yesterday's students who can't really accomplish anything but want to earn like grown-ups. Non-professionals = no competition. Plus, today's young people probably had computers and smartphones since early childhood, so their reading history must be flawed compared to mine—at least that's the impression I get from reading some of their translations. My second cousin, who was about her little son's age the last time I saw her before her last visit, was a mediocre student as she herself admits (compare that with me who flunked out of university), and now she designs buildings. She gave us a colorful description of the ordeals she has to go through to hire and train new candidates: they don't know anything about the job but want to be paid as much as seasoned pros. Without doing much of anything the rest of us call "work." The other factors haven't affected me much either. The first day I had to show up in the office with my current employer was in early March 2020: I was sitting there alone, and most businesses outside were closed. Since then, my order flow has been pretty steady and tense, with relaxed days popping up every now and then. The only difference between then and now is that now my YouTube only works with a VPN (free VPN in my case), so I have to watch Polish or Dutch ads when AdBlock stops working. Dutch people, how can you live with Dutch ads? Srsly, they are awful. And, mind you, they were created by someone believing that it's possible for me as a consumer to follow an ad when it interrupts me from watching or reading something I want to watch or readCollapse
