Yes, and found serious errors...she didn't care Mar 3

Yes. The other day a client (individual) sent me an AI-translated contract to proofread. Deepl. At least she was totally transparent about it.
I immediately spotted a couple of major errors
I told her "Look, I really need to proofread the whole thing carefully, I can't just skim it for a small fee. It has important mistakes that are immediately evident."
She said she couldn't afford it, and would just use the contract (a rental contract) as it was.
Yikes!

Somehow, I’m glad that some people use AI-generated translations without proper proofreading. It only takes a couple of such errors to cause a disaster in a court or medical setting (sorry for my cynicism) for everyone to realize that we are not yet at the point where humans can be replaced.

Harmless Mar 3

At the same time this would never have been a customer in the pre-AI era (she couldn't afford it), so this is on her and basically harmless for the human translation industry. It is less harmless for her and the renting party.

Yes, the human one (in an extremely sneaky way) Mar 3

Not AI, can’t recall it. I don’t do proofreading. One time I was assigned a translation task, about 15k-20k words. A few days after I started, the client asked me to just “check” a section in the middle of this text (starting perhaps at the 10k word point), that had been done by another translator. I explained to them I don’t check other people’s work. They said “just this one time”. It was actually someone’s test translation (a chunk of text) that had been presented to me in a... See more

She obviously can afford to lose any future litigation - if she's unlucky and things turn the wrong way.

Or maybe she can't, but still doesn't know it.
