When I read a posting that offered an urgent job for $0.03 per word and the so called 'urgent' job will be paid within 30 days from the invoice date, I thought it was a joke.

Do you think they will get someone to do it? I really doubt it. Even an amateur will decline this job.

They should call themselves a 'joke poster' rather than a job poster. IMHO they do not pay respect to our profession.

An amateur has to decline it, because it is paid work, otherwise he would be a professional.

on 3 cents a word Feb 24, 2008

I got a similar offer once from PRC for the EN>SL pair. Think of it:

i) there's a market of 6 (or is it 7?) billion Chinese, looking for something that only less than 2 M Slovenians can offer - the actual number is below 100, including non-mother language speakers.
ii) Rhetorical question: is it a buyer's or is it a seller's market?

Yes, I read a 3 cents per word job posting today Feb 24, 2008

It was in the German-English language pair. Naturally source words were meant. The reasoning behind the rate of 3 cents was explained as being that the short document concerned was part of an order containing a very large batch of documents, so naturally a volume discount would be required.

Does an amateur work for free? Feb 25, 2008

Are you sure? Do you mean an amateur will be pleased to do any job for free?

Yes, this is ridiculous. You should have applied a minimum payment.

This is not a part of a large job. That's the difference. Feb 25, 2008

Dear Astrid,

If this is a part of a large job, we can understand it. Probably some translators will consider taking this job, though they deserve an incentive for doing a small job with a tight deadline (less than 12 hours?), such as shorter payment terms.

But the fact is this is a one-time job of 3k words which will be split for 2 translators. In this case the translators will be paid $45 each within 30 days. This is not fair for them. Don't you think so?

Furthermore this is a Thai job which costs at least $0.05/word in the market.

One of those "translation brokers"? Feb 25, 2008

Last summer I received a phone call from a US "agency" - the guy interviewed me for about 20 minutes regarding my expertise, specialization, credentials and what not. They had a really really big, really really technical high-end project that was supposed to be given to really really top-notch translators only. He was pleased and said the job was mine.

Then he explained their business concept: They take translation jobs from translation agencies, find translators and (imagine that!) GUARANTEE the payment. Aww, the altruism.

(Note: My clients are called "clients" for a reason. To assume that they don't pay is an insult.)

Then he said:

"Because your payment will be guaranteed we are paying 2 cents per source word. Would you also give a high-volume discount?"

What a coincidence! I also received the same call from a US agency and was interviewed for about 10 min. But they didn't say anything about the proposed rate. They just said that the estimated volume of this job is more than 1.5 million words. Wow! I haven't heard anymore from them since then.

Amazing Feb 25, 2008

That was the word count the guy was talking about.

This guy was too knowledgeable in terms of translation business, otherwise I would have considered it a prank call.

I hung up anyway.

The name of the game, for us, is productivity (like riding the MT wave) and taking advantage of lowering expectations. How often do you read the user manuals of things you buy? I do. No quality control stopped them. Food for thought, no?

"Poisoning of springs", no. Giving customers what they think they need (and arguably they know better than I, their translator) yes. Let's try to turn to our advantage what will happen anyway.

People want to be tricked... Feb 25, 2008

And other people want to trick you and cheat you if they can. That's how the world is. Ignore them and spend time only on the serious clients. Why are people always so surprised and preoccupied with this subject? Some clients are cheap... get over it.

Do we really need a discussion here every time someody posts a job at a low rate? If you don't like the rate, don't apply. This is a free market.

An amateur by definition is someone who does it for free. But I'm also poking fun at you (and at these threads that recur) -- the word "amateur" is also used to indicate someone who is unskilled.
