Summary:The webinar lays out the basics steps in the process of translating culture-specific elements in scientific, professional and official translations (SPOTs). The webinar is designed as 60 minutes of practice and sample translations of rather demanding areas of culture-specific elements. Instead of footnotes and additional explanations, accuracy in SPOTs is to be achieved by means of equivalents as close as possible to the original culture-specific element. Thus the only tip & trick is to develop the skill of finding the perfect equivalent in the target language.
Description
This webinar is meant to be the first part of a larger training course the second of which is a self-paced training course. The webinar would lay out the basics steps in the process of translating culture-specific elements in scientific, professional and official translations (SPOTs) whereas the second part is designed as a follow-up and an in-depth training course full of instructions how to actually handle SPOTs in practice. Both training sessions will be based on a new approach in translation, the cogno-cultural approach. This approach relies heavily on the aspect of cognition and culture, the two most important elements in understanding and translating culture-specific elements in SPOTs.

The webinar is designed as 60 minutes of practice and sample translations of tricky areas known as rather demanding areas of culture-specific elements. The fact that they appear in SPOTs makes them even more difficult as in non-literary translation, footnotes and cumbersome additional translator's explanations are not recommended.

The condense and very precise context of SPOTs sets the requirement that accuracy is achieved by means of an equivalent as close as possible to the original culture-specific element. In other words, the only tip & trick is to develop the skill of finding the perfect equivalent in the target language.

The agenda of the course will be as follows:

1. Workshop session: Examples & practice (50 min)
2. Q&A 10 min

All the material needed for this webinar will be included in the presentation whereas extra material will be included in the self-paced training course.

Candidates are kindly advised to have a pen and a notepad ready for the practical workshop examples in the webinar.
