"Long Tail economics are present in virtually every E-commerce site. But the question is really where the money is in the Tail? Well, the real money is in filtering the Tail.
Filtering makes it easier to find the content in which we are interested, despite the increasing size of content catalogs. The purest form of filtering is key word search. But the more blur the content, the less effective is key word search. Even tagging products quickly provides for a user too many results to browse. Beyond a couple of thousands of references, only collaborative filtering gets really efficient."

Das aber ist eine ganze Menge - und genau das ist der "Long Tail" - im Deutschen sprechen wir gern von einem "Rattenschwanz". Abgeleitet ist der Begriff von der Form einer Häufigkeitsverteilung: Links stehen die wenigen Dinge, die häufig nachgefragt werden - die Kurve ist hoch und schmal. Rechts schließt sich der lange, immer dünner werdende Rattenschwanz der vielen selten nachgefragten Artikel an.
