flame shield
Explanation:
in Italian this can mean a shield, usually perforated, that protects an exposed flame from external interference, thus estingushing it.
Sometimes the word is used to indicate a protection (for humans) from an exposed flame. I have never been happy with the latter usage.

Asker: the coal miners had davy lamps which had to be able to light without causing the methane in the mines to explode. in italian they are lampade salvafiamma. they had what are called flame arresters. think that might be it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame_arrestor

flamesaver

Explanation:
This gets a lot of hits regarding propane tanks. Only thing is that in some cases it is written in capitals with a trademark symbol.... not sure if it's what you are after.

I don't know... is there any other context to give more idea as to what they are on about. Are they talking about safety in general or just features. A flamesaver is the valve that keeps some gas flowing so there is always a pilot light and your flame arrester is more a safety feature for miners... depends what they are discussing, doesn't it?
