Born on 4 January 1643, Newton grew up in Lincolnshire. Neither of his
parents knew how to read and write – his father died shortly before the
boy was born. Aged twelve he was sent away to school in Grantham. He
bought a small notebook with a vellum cover with two and a half pence
his mother had given him. Inside, in microscopic writing, he penned
Isacus Newton hunc librum possidet – ‘he possesses this book’ and then his
first notes:

He soon graduates to TABLES OF THE SUN'S ALTITUDE through the year,

agree  Mariagrazia Centanni: La misurazione dell'altezza del sole serviva per calcolare l'ora del giorno, cioè sostituiva l'orologio. Se ne trovano degli esempi in alcune chiese medioevali, come in San Petronio a Bologna e con le effemeridi non c'entrano proprio nulla !!!

neutral  Danila Moro: sicuramente è un termine tecnico, però qui si parla solo di "altezza del sole", non di tutti gli altri parametri, non so se sia adeguato ampliare il concetto in questo modo

  -> Sì, le effemeridi comprendono tutto. E' un'opzione data all'asker. Per me è deformazione professionale, sono appassionata di astrologia e le chiamo così! :-)

disagree  Mariagrazia Centanni: le tavole che misurano l'altezza del sole sono rapportate alla terra e sono nate per conoscere il tempo, l'ora. Le effemeridi sono una carta geografica del cielo: la posizione del sole nel cielo non ha a che fare con la sua altezza rispetto alla terra.
