Spanish term or phrase: el producto “bombero”
SPAIN. Tomato farmers are discussing insecticides. I understand what they mean (it puts out the "fire" of pest infestation) but can't quite get it to sound right in English. Suggestions welcome.

"Es el producto “bombero”, por su precio y eficacia lo utilizan solo en caso de necesidad."

last-stand product

Explanation:
Only in the worst case scenario is this product resorted to. Finally, although reluctantly, bringing in the heavy artillery.

Or indeed, you might want to move it around and simply say that the product is only used as a last resort, given its price.

I KNEW last-stand wasn't quite the word I was looking for: I'd give you a five for "last-ditch"!

Notes to answerer
Asker: I've been toying with "last-ditch/resort". Basically just brainstorming to see if people come up with something better than "firefighter"... :)
