Marco has been jumping around between (1) his fantasy of going to bed with a girl he met outside a bar the night before, (2) the history of Tango (relevant here due to effects of his hangover & two Latino dancers he saw at the bar), and (3) a conversation he is currently having with his mother who is arranging lunch while they wait for Marco's father to come home. I am assuming this bit relates to one of the last two ideas, but am now a bit lost:

Explanation:
In the sense of made space for itself in my mind.

I chose it because to make one's way into also mirrors the Italian verb 'fare' and gives the idea of the passiveness of the subject who cannot help but let the thought through.

Explanation:
You need something that sounds just as natural in English as "fare breccia nell'imaginazione" does in Italian. Here "really" is needed to make it as strong as the Italian. Basically, he saw this dancer or whatever and he really started to imagine things. A literal approach of "once more unto the breach of his imagination" doesn't work unfortunately. Need an equivalent.

yes, break through sounds like a wall.... reality breaking through, but to me, when someone is imagining something, seeping through sounds more subtle, not as violent as "breaking" as one day dreams
