English term or phrase: an essential choir of solo voices

Merci d'avance,

Mathieu

fondamentale
Explanation:
Rifkin has always been a problem with music in that he feels differently than most Baroque musical scholars. I believe he means here that Bach's compositions are based on a fundament of choral soloists. The word Fondament(fundament)has many meanings (including the Shakespearian scatalogical) but in this case I think it is appropriate.

Explanation:
J'ai trouvé une définition intéressante de "ripieno" dans Babylon : "Full orchestra as distinguished from the soloists".

"essential" sounds like a F.C. to me.

un choeur principal composé de solistes

Explanation:

Ripieno
Ripieno is very similar to "tutti" which means everyone plays together. In the concerto grosso of the Baroque period, the ripieno occurred when the entire orchestra played including the soloists as part of the orchestra. At this particular juncture of musical performance there is no distinction between antiphonal or responsorial groups or ensemble and orchestra.
