Itik dari jenis mallard itu disebut alabio, karena di Hulu Sungai Utara paling banyak dijual di pasar Alabio. Sebagai plasma nutfah Indonesia, itik alabio memiliki tubuh relatif besar dibanding itik jenis lainnya. Bobot badannya untuk dewasa betina mencapai 1,6 kg – 1,8 kg dan dewasa jantan 1,8 kg – 2,0 kg. Warna bulunya coklat
dengan bintik-bintik putih di seluruh badan dengan garis putih di sekitar mata. Pada jenis jantan, warna bulu cenderung gelap. Sayapnya terdapat beberapa helai bulu suri berwarna hijau kebiruan mengkilap. Warna paruh dan kaki kuning terang.

Kalau menurut saya jawaban Pak Ikram jika liarnya dihilangkan justru sudah benar. Dari kamus Oxford, dijelaskan bahwa Mallard adalah jenis bebek, yang hidup di hemisfer bagian utara, yang jenis pejantannya berkepala hijau tua dengan bagian leher berwarna putih. Jadi menurut sumber ini kalau diterjemahkan itik kalung, itu hanya merupakan tipe pejantannya. Bebek Mallard bukan jenis bebek liar, karena ketika dipiara pun dia tetap jenis bebek Mallard. Jadi jenis Mallard ini tidak ditentukan oleh liar atau tidaknya.
Bebek Mallard bukan hewan yang asal usulnya Indonesia dan bukan tipe Indonesia. Jadi mencari jenis yang lebih Indonesia sepertinya justru mengaburkan tipe Mallard itu sendiri. Seandainya bukan karena bahasa Indonesia (sesuai kamus Oxford) maka Mallard saja saya kira sudah cukup. Karena ini jenis bebek, maka tepatnya diterjemahkan bebek Mallard, seperti lele dumbo, ayam Bangkok, Bank BRI (BRI sendiri singkatan dari Bank Rakyat Indonesia).
