I need to find a translation for leprechaunds in figurative sense, in use in Ireland.
I have found tones of descriptions and definitions on leprechaunds, no one matches with my translation.

My problem is finding the right meaning of leprechaund in the following text: " There are only 20 remaining leprechauns left alive in Ireland, making it the country's most endagered species. It is widely feared that the few that are left will succumb to Bird Flu once it reaches the Emerald Isle."
A literal translation does not make any sense here.
