  -> Interesting. Do you have any references? A few of the Google hits have things like "minería a cielo abierto (o minería superficial)" so I was under the impression that they were the same thing, although I'm admittedly not an expert in this field.

neutral  Marc Adler: This term is also used, but if you check the number of Google hits for each, you'll see that "minería a cielo abierto" has broader currency. - I absolutely believe that the more options the better! I just wanted to make sure.
