It would be premature to claim that the war against HIV/AIDS is being won when the disease claimed 3 million lives in 2005 and the level of attrition is rising.


In the sentence before, achievements on the war against AIDS are underlined. BUT...

If someone could explain me what "level of attrition" means in English, perhaps I can find a good translation into Portuguese :-)

So far, I think it could be 1 of of 2 things: work absence (due to illness); or refusal to being treated. But these are just my thoughts. Thank you very much in advance for any help!

"Level of attrition" means "the number (amount) of people dying". In your case, it means that the (total) number of people dying from the effects of HIV is slowly and progressively increasing. More and more each day. HTH.

it is not an appropriate term because it means the level of diminuition is rising. The numbers are rising, are not being reduced.
