Συμφωνώ αρχικά κατά πολύ με το "gimmick", αλλά στην πορεία κάτι με παρέπεμπε σε "επινόηση" και άλλα παράγωγα, κυρίως μέσα από λογοτεχνία. Έτσι, μου ήρθε στο μυαλό το "plot device", στην ουσία ένα μέσο, ένα "gimmick" (!!) used to propel plot and action.
Το "device" λοιπόν χρησιμοποιείται και στη λογοτεχνία και στο θέατρο: the special use of words in literature or of words, lights, etc in a play, to achieve an effect...
Τώρα, εδώ θα έλεγα "directing device", εφόσον σου κάνει.
