Explanation:
Abertura política é considerado mais como um processo do que como um estado. Political openness doesn't work for a process. Democratization is a process, but might go to far when talking about the abertura política in Brazil of the late 70s.

For countries like China, Cuba, Iraq, Mozambique, Portugal etc. the term "political opening up" was or is being used. While the latter dictatorships were toppled by a revolution, you might compare the abertura política in 1970s Brazil - still far from the first free elections - to the situation in Cuba or China nowadays where first small steps are being demanded.
