I was beginning to have doubts, since I don't have any pics, although I knew it had to be related with their position. I decided to choose 'affronted' since it appears in many related websites.

Coming a little late to this. It refers to the position of the griffins, facing one another, face-to-face. It is a common way of representing creatures in a lot of different cultures and was particularly common in heraldry. It does not refer to them being in relief, even if they often would be depicted in this way.

no caso de duvidas, expressa tanto a posicao frente a frente (enfrentados), como a expressao de ofendidos/irados/afrontados.

I don't have any pics, but I've looked around the internet and I immediately thought it could be facing each other or something, but it doesn't make sense in some sentences.
Then I noticed that in many paintings Griffins appear in relief in relation to everything else in the painting. That would make sense.
It's the only explanation I can find to some of the sentences...
