Explanation:
As you all know, Russia is a federation consisting of 89 subjects of equal federal rights with equal representation (2 delegates each) in the Federation Council, but differing in degree of autonomy. Each subject of the federation belongs to one of the following categories: 21 republics, 49 oblasts, 6 krais, 1 autonomous oblast, 10 autonomous okrugs, and 2 federal cities. Starting in 2004 some subjects were merged into larger territories (krais).
Perhaps this will be of some help to a fellow translator...

My point is that the term federal subject(s) or subject(s) of the federation is the term used in English and not entity, region, etc. We simply use what the Russians use - subject(s). Seems reasonable - KISS!!

  -> There has always been confusion about what to call Russia's subdivisions. See Note Added above for an excellent explanation, and names that we should all adopt for consistency.
