En vías férreas, las traviesas o durmientes (América Latina) son los elementos transversales al eje de la vía que sirven para mantener unidos y a la vez a una distancia fija (galga o trocha) a los dos carril (riel)es que conforman la vía, así como mantenerlos unidos al balasto, trasmitiendo el peso del material rodante al balasto y, por intermedio de éste, al suelo. También cumplen la función de dar peso al conjunto, de manera que la geometría inicial del trazado se mantenga en la mayor medida posible. Se fabrican de diversos materiales, entre ellos madera, hierro y hormigón. Las traviesas de hormigón pueden ser monobloque o bibloque; las primeras están formadas por una sola pieza de hormigón armado, mientras que las traviesas bibloque constan de dos piezas de hormigón unidas por una barra de hierro (riostra).
Además, las traviesas de hormigón monobloque pueden ser polivalentes si los carriles se pueden fijar en dos posiciones distintas para permitir la instalación de vías de diferentes anchos.
