Hungarian to English: József Attila : Áldalak búval, vigalommal
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - Hungarian
Áldalak búval, vigalommal,
féltelek szeretnivalómmal,
őrizlek kérő tenyerekkel:
búzaföldekkel, fellegekkel.

Topogásod muzsikás romlás,
falam ellened örök omlás,
düledék-árnyán ringatózom,
leheletedbe burkolózom.

Mindegy szeretsz-e, nem szeretsz-e,
szivemhez szívvel keveredsz-e, -
látlak, hallak és énekellek,
Istennek tégedet felellek.

Hajnalban nyújtózik az erdő,
ezer ölelő karja megnő,
az égről a fényt leszakítja,
szerelmes szivére borítja.
Translation - English
I praise you in grief and delight,
I guard you with my devotion,
I shield you with pleading palms:
With fields of wheat and rolling clouds.

Your hesitation, melodic decline
My fortress against you, eternal erosion
On its ruin-shadows I’m cradled on,
Enfolded in your exhalation.

It matters not if you love me or not,
Whether you approach my heart with emotion –
I see you, hear you, and sing of you,
It is you I call my god.

The forest stretches at sunrise,
A thousand arms spread for embracing;
With light plucked from the skies,
Envelops its adoring heart.
Hungarian to English: Tamási Áron: Ábel a rengetegben
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature

Translation - English
…what mystical creature man is! During the day he struggles with that which is; and at night he struggles with that which is not. And when the day is over and the night is over, that which was becomes entirely identical with that which was not. He has such vast intellect that he can forge the weapon from steel, and he can fabricate the devil from nothing, but he can never estimate what will happen tomorrow; though it could have been easy the day prior to predict that which happened yesterday.

Bio

Born in Romania into a Hungarian family, I completed my university studies in the USA, with a BA in French and an MA in American Studies / Folklore. Despite my humanities diplomas, I've been working in R&D fields for the past 7+ years, covering space exploration, biological engineering, and neurofeedback subjects most recently. I believe that we should be responsible stewards of Earth, and I strive to align my work with efforts to do so. Literary translations bring balance to my life.
