BILLS for pre-crisis buccaneering are still coming in. Deutsche Bank, Germany’s biggest lender, confirmed on September 15th that America’s Department of Justice (DoJ) had asked for $14 billion to settle possible claims connected with the underwriting and sale of residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBSs) between 2005 and 2007. The next day Deutsche’s share price, already reeling after a wretched year, plunged by 8%. It was groggier still after the weekend, closing on September 20th at a 30-year low (see chart).

American banks have settled with the DoJ for amounts between $3.2 billion (Morgan Stanley) and $16.7 billion (Bank of America), as well as agreeing on smaller sums with the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), another regulator. Deutsche, which settled with the FHFA for $1.9 billion in 2013, insists that it will not pay anything near to what the DoJ has asked for, and it surely won’t. Citigroup, which reached an RMBS deal with the department in 2014, reportedly haggled its way from $12 billion to $7 billion.

6. Reactive Movements

Neuroscientist Rodolfo R. Llinas wrote in his book 'I of the Vortex' that "(...) the brain operates on a what-is-important-to-know-at-this-moment-only basis." Our movements are no exception. When they are entirely focused, the dancer chooses their own muscle extensions and contractions for the sole purpose of the tendency mentioned above. If that's the case, are reactionary movements the products of the brain's intricate calculations or planning? Or are they Pavlovian in nature? Can a dance occur reflexively, just as one shuts their eyes in the face of danger?

Reactions are phenomenons that occur as responses to stimuli. A big question lingered in my head for a long time: How can dancers who chose to act based on these reactionary products make movements relying solely on their bodies and keywords without fabricating or exaggerating themselves? In the end, I was able to find a clear answer.

In order to move, one must undergo a thought process. Are all movements performed after thinking and planning ahead? The short answer is no. This is easier to understand if we think about how we brush our teeth in the morning. Let's say you already put toothpaste on your toothbrush as you walk to the bathroom. Do you recall which side you began with? Can you remember how many times you brushed your right teeth before moving to the left? Was this all planned? Brushing your teeth is performed by moving between the conscious and the subconscious. This sequence is made possible by learning. Dancers constantly in motion react to the present by moving back and forth between the conscious and the subconscious using their learned movements and the brain's tendency to rely on the present.

Reactive elements are not limited to premeditated ones. They could be anything that stimulates us. Therefore, reactions to movements require one to choose and concentrate every moment. A dancer may become motivated by their colleague's motion to change their own actions, and go with the spatial changes following fellow dancers' ever-changing movements. Elements such as rhythm, melody, or even intermittent noises outside the studio can invoke a reactionary movement. The list is endless, and they create innumerable actions.

Movements created this way can tell a great many tales. Based on kinetic movements, dance is an art form that can change the perception of reality. Dance is an act of desperation for those who lost hope in realities they cannot change. French philosopher Chantal Jaquet writes in 'Le Corps' :

"Dance has the power to change objects. Dance is an art that moves reality and frees it from artificial fixation, (...) for bodily capabilities do not limit themselves to interpreting objects but instead focus on changing them. Bodily capabilities are active freedoms of expression.“

Therefore, the dancers' reactive movements are precisely the stories of their lives and are just as colorful as their lives. Their movements approach the audience as an art form of life, coming across the audience's imagination. Since their imagination is based on personal histories, their feelings are just as varied. As the dancers' personal lives react in their own ways by their awakened senses, the audience also observes and responds to their movements through perspectives and imaginations of their own. Eventually, the audience imbues meanings and responds to them as well. Could it be this process's culmination that changes our lives?

- Helping You Overcome Language Barriers in EN-to-KR and KR-to-EN

About Me

Greetings! Thanks for visiting my profile. I'm Sang Min, a native Korean born and bred in Busan, South Korea but with some experience living abroad in the UK and the US. I have been exposed to English media for as long as I can remember, with my first English program (that I can remember) being Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy! syndication which was broadcast on Armed Forces Network Korea (AFKN) in Seoul when I was a wee lad. Now, with over 25 years worth of English knowledge at my disposal, I'm helping English and Korean speakers to get their points across others (so long as they're not particularly... pointy).

When I'm not translating as part of my job, I work on my "passion" translation projects, such as contributing to user-created modifications for indie games and making subtitles for obscure British comedies. When I'm not translating for either my job OR my passion projects, I immerse myself in video games or films (good or bad, so long as they're entertaining)

What I Did

Back in the mid-2010s, before I became a translator, I worked on and off for BeFM, a Busan-based local English radio station, writing, editing, and even starring in local affairs programmes (by the way, I signed up mostly to help out with admin work and expected to do anything BUT the things I've mentioned.)

After becoming a translator, I worked on company presentations for overseas automobile clients, provided English translations for a webzine, and translated websites into English. Have a look at my sample translation section!
