Many of the doctrines and concepts central to Christianity have important philosophical implications or presuppositions. In this article we will take a closer look at some of the central doctrines and concepts, and their philosophical relevance.
Of course, many philosophically laden doctrines and concepts are relevant to Christianity, and we cannot discuss them all here. Rather, our focus will be on those concepts and doctrines that are distinctively Christian, and which have been the focus of a good deal of recent discussion in the philosophical literature. Thus, although theism is a central Christian concept, it is not distinctively Christian and so will not be covered here. Further, although views about the Eucharist, a central Christian concept, have held a significant place in the philosophical dialogue in former times, it will not be discussed here since it has not been a significant focus of recent discussions. As a result, we will concentrate on three distinctive and central Christian concepts which have received significant attention in the recent literature: the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, and views on the nature of atonement.

Viele Doktrinen und Konzepte, die dem Christentum zentral sind, haben wichtige philosophische Folgerungen und Voraussetzungen. In diesem Artikel wenden wir uns genauer an einige diese zentralen Doktrinen und Konzepte, und deren philosophische Relevanz.
Natuerlich gibt es viele philosophisch belastete Doktrinen und Konzepte, die dem Christentum zentral sind, aber wir werden sie nicht alle hier behandeln koennen. So konzentrieren wir uns lediglich auf die Konzepte und Doktrinen, die sowol konkret christlich sind, als auch kuerzlich viel Diskussion in der philosophischen Literatur auf sich gezogen haben. So ist, zum Beispiel, Theismus ein zentrales christliches Konzept, ist aber nicht bezeichnend christlich, und wird somit hier nicht behandelt werden. Auch wird die Eucharistie, ein zentrales christliches Konzept, das in der Vergangenheit einen bedeutlichen Platz in philosophischen Diskussionen hatte, hier nicht behandelt, da es seit neustem kein bedeutender Schwerpunkt der Diskussion ist. So werden wir uns also auf drei konkrete und zentrale christliche Konzepte konzentrieren, die in juengster Literatur bedeutende Aufmerksamkeit erhalten haben: die Doktrine der Dreieinigkeit, die der Inkarnation und Meinungen ueber die Beschaffenheit des Versoehnungswerkes Christi.

Acht Jahre liegen zwischen beiden Büchern "Vom Frieden zwischen den Religionen" und den "Philosophisch-theologischen Werken", berichtet Otto Kallscheuer, acht Jahre, die Cusanus' Sichtweise auf Rom, Byzanz und den drohenden "Türkenkreuzzug" verändert hätten. Nikolaus von Kues' Lesart des Korans sei in den späteren Schriften weniger freundlich ausgefallen, meint Kallscheuer. Der Rezensent stellt Nikolaus von Kues alias Nikolaus Cusanus, wie er in Italien hieß, als politischen Intellektuellen und Reformer des 15. Jahrhunderts vor, ein Humanist und undogmatischer Denker, der, wie Kallscheuer schreibt, Mathematik und Philosophie, Theologie und Welterforschung "noch in einer negativen Dialektik" zusammenbringen konnte; so ungewöhnliche Wege sein Denken auch beschreiten mochte, so handelte er doch "durch und durch katholisch", fasst Kallscheuer zusammen.

A time period of eight years spans the two books "Of Peace between the Religions" and "Philosophical-theological Works", Otto Kallscheuer reports; eight years that have changed Cusanus' perspective in regards to Rome, Byzantium, and the impending "Turk-crusade". Nikolaus von Kues' reading of the Koran in his later works is not as favorable, Kallscheuer believes. The critic introduces Nikolaus von Kues, aka Nikolaus Cusanus, as he was known in Italy, as a political intellectual and reformer of the 15th Century, a humanist and undogmatic thinker, who, as Kallscheuer writes, was still able to combine mathematics and philosophy, theology and world exploration in a "negative dialectic". As unusual as the pathways of his thinking may have been, he was none the less, through and through catholic, Kallscheuer concludes.
We all have our strong and weak areas in learning. However, it is amazing to me, just how easy it is to find a way to use music to teach just about anything to anyone! If ever there was a "wonder-way" to teach and reach every student in the way they learn best, it's through this marvelous subject, music! No matter what the range of talent or ability in music, we all have an ability for enjoying a musical experience. Remember, there is no such thing as tone deaf. There are many folks who might disagree with that statement, but I have come to believe that the people that aren't able to sing in tune have just not been lead with the appropriate approaches. In other words, we just need to find their learning style strength and approach the ear-training from their particular point of understanding. There may be exceptions to this approach but it is my belief that the majority of out of tune singers simply haven't been given the opportunities to learn the way they learn best.

Wir alle haben Staerken und Schwaechen in unserem Lernvermoegen. Es erstaunt mich jedoch, wie einfach es ist, jemandem durch Musik fast alles beibringen zu koennen. Wenn es je einen "Wunderweg" gaebe jedem Schueler alles auf eine Weise beizubringen, durch die er am besten lernt, ist es durch diese fabelhafte Methode: Musik! Es ist voellig egal, welch Talent oder welch Begabung in Musik vorhanden ist, wir haben alle die Faehigkeit ein musikalisches Erlebnis zu geniessen. Man denke daran, dass es niemanden giebt der tonal stocktaub ist. Es gibt sicherlich viele, die damit nicht uebereinstimmen, aber ich bin ueberzeugt, dass Leute, die falsch singen einfach nicht mit der richtigen Methode angeleitet wurden. Mit anderen Worten muessen wir einfach ihren Lernstil oder ihre Lernstaerke finden und ihr Gehoertraining von der bestimmten Perspektive her angehen. Es ist moeglich, dass es Ausnahmen zu dieser Vorgangsweise gibt, aber ich bin fest ueberzeugt, dass die Mehrheit falsch singt, weil sie einfach nicht die Moeglichkeit hatte, so zu lernen, wie sie am besten auffasst.

Born to an American Mother and German Father I grew up completely bilingual and went through schooling in Germany. I honestly cannot remember when I started translating, but I do know that at 15 I was helping with simultaneous translation from German to English during church services. Translation between my two native tongues has been so much a part of every day life for me for so long, it flows naturally.
I majored in English and German for Abitur (to be compared with an Associates Degree in the US or A-Levels in England), and then went on to get a Bachelors Degree in Biblical Studies with an international university, studying in over 10 locations around the world. Languages and their intricacies, their deep-rooted connection to cultures, and the understanding they provide into the way people think, have long been a passion for me. I always aim to translate not only the letter but the spirit of a text, to capture the culturally appropriate way of expressing idioms or even jokes.
