Declaration of Independence Mar 21

In 2008 Kilgray released this:

This Declaration of Independence is a very serious commitment on our part to protect our customer’s best interests.

They are independent Mar 21

memoQ is independent. Most other tools are not:
- Trados is affiliated with RWS
- Wordfast is affiliated with TransPerfect
- CafeTran is affiliated with ProZ
- Transit is affiliated with Star
- Matecat is affiliated with Translated

What remains? memoQ, Across, OmegaT, Swordfish, and some web-only tools.

Sharing and collaboration Mar 21

Why would you use a web-based CAT tool?

Because it makes sharing of resources among colleagues easy, allowing collaborative work on projects. Also, some people are terrible at backups, and a private tool like WFA can prevent loss of precious data. Finally, continuous improvement is much easier on web-based tools, as you do not have to download patches and service packs and whatnot. You are always on the latest version.

Relevance Mar 21

The crucial word was not independence, but commitment.

Sharing among colleagues Mar 21

My colleagues and I used Lingotek, a web-based CAT tool with shareable TM. The thing was, we had only one translator per language, so sharing the TM was a moot point. The apparent advantage was how well the TM operated in real time.

I think memoQ will have to be more upfront and forthcoming to win over thousands of desktop memoQ users. Just the occasional LinkedIn posting by some memoQ officer won't be enough to educate people about the advantages of using a web-based CAT tool.

Until recently, individual translators could use memoQ's Language Terminal to share TMs and TBs online with a colleague so they could collaborate on a big project and see each others' TM entries, which helped with consistency. I used it once, and it was a great function. Then memoQ scrapped it. Will that web solution provide this feature again? They don't say. It seems we'll be in limbo in terms of new features – even just getting the ones we had already – for many years now.

My exterience using online tools is bad Apr 26

What comes to my humble mind is that they will sell bilingual data to AI-tutoring companies and prosper.
I have clients for whom I work in an online tool, these solutions have nothing to do with ease of use or new features, I attribute their success solely to the work of their marketing team, legal compliance, etc. The translator clearly suffers using these horrible online warez. I have no doubts that the online MQ will be just as bad.
