I may be missing the point, but I am failing to see how such a survey can be useful to the proz.com community.
I was thinking if the flapping velocity of the hummingbirds that visit me some days and their reproductive cycle are related to my productivity when I open 5 softwares during the week.
So... no, you aren't missing the point. | | | Mario Chavez (X) Local time: 12:49 מאנגלית לספרדית + ... Muriel got it | Jul 21, 2016 |

I'd say I average about 5. I always have Word, Outlook, and Firefox open and often Adobe and Excel as well. That's what I've got open right now, plus my Merriam-Webster's dictionary and a photo editor. And don't even ask me how many tabs I have open on Firefox!

Hahahah, thanks, Ilan and Michael. Let me explain.
At the risk of sounding a bit pedantic, a software program is any set of instructions carried out automatically or semiautomatically (with user intervention) in a preset order to achieve a result. Take Print or Save as PDF.

As Ilan explained, the Internet is not a program per se (it's a network of networks, simply put), but a browser, which started so humbly in the early 1990s (remember CompuServe, one of the first?), is a very complex piece of software. I routinely keep Chrome open with at least 4-6 tabs, which run independently as separate programs.
On top of that, these programs usually run on my desktop, regardless of type of translation:
Oxford CD-ROM dictionary (faster than a browser, by the way)
Adobe Acrobat (to view PDF files)
MS Word or Excel
MS Outlook
Deja Vu X3 or SDL Trados (sometimes both simultaneously)
Quicken (my financial program, to spew out invoices)
If I'm doing translation and typesetting, then InDesign CS6 or Illustrator CS5.5 are there too. ▲ Collapse | |

Now, if you open File Manager and see all the stuff that is open, you can add another 50 items or more to the list. Each of these is a program. "With user intervention" is not an acurate part of the definition of a "program", IMO.

Plus all the "programs" that Windows loads when it opens and while you're using the computer.
So the answer is actually "hard to tell", and it varies at about every 10 minutes.

The definition of a software program is broad. I've worked in the software industry for years, so I know what I'm talking about.
There's nothing personal in my definition. Nitpicking a person's definition is not the point of this poll. | | | Mario Freitas ברזיל Local time: 13:49 חבר (2014) מאנגלית לפורטוגזית + ... I'm sorry to disagree | Jul 22, 2016 |

Mario, this is an open forum. People are allowed to disagree and debate freely. No offense at all here.
Could you show us a link with the definition of "program" including the expression "with user intervention"? That would be a pretty smart way to respond, instead. | | | דפים בנושא: < [1 2] | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How many programs do you keep open while translating?
