In general, I do not have the time or the disposition to look into blogs, but over the years I’ve come across a few. I’ve been around for a while but never thought about starting a translation blog. I feel I have anything earth-shattering to add to the content already being shared by some bloggers. Thanks Michael for summing it up so succinctly. I might add ...spend time with my family, friends, errands, exercise, hobbies and a long "to do" list that doesn't leave much time for sitting around reading about translation.

Responding to proz polls like this are as near as I get to blogging. As a busy working translator myself, I sometimes find myself wondering if bloggers actually do any real work. I mean, where do they find the time? Between work and real-life, I find I have very little left over to do anything like blogging. Even things like going to the bank or waiting in line for vehicle inspections (just two of the real world activities I have to deal with this week) are thieves of time for me...

However, I have a friend/colleague who seems to manage both quite well, even publishing a book (which I bought, but haven't had time to read yet!) and articles about translation as well as actually working, so I suppose it's horses for courses... ▲ Collapse

They have helped me tremendously with their blogs, e-books and paper books (often derived from valuable and helpful blog posts which they have posted over the years) to avoid many beginner's mistakes. I have been able to quickly build up a flourishing freelance business because of the contributions by people like Corinne McKay, Andrew Morris, Tess Whitty and Marta Stelmaszak. I read a couple of them and I found info about how you can find more clients and why you shouldn't work at low rates... nothing new at the end of the day.
When I launched my website the graphic designer asked me if I wanted a blog, I said no, because a blog on my website should impress my clients and I should be more informed than them (quite difficult) on their core business - and I am nobody to teach my colleagues... so no blog!

Translation blogs helped me at the beginning of my career; there's a lot of useful information for beginners. I'm currently following a EN-ES legal interpreter in the USA who talks about the hardships of the job.

I like what Gianluca, Andrea and Fiona have said about blogs. I also like what Michael, Neilmac and Yaotl say about their views and experiences with blogs.
I agree: different strokes for different folks. I know some of the named bloggers personally. McKay's blogging strikes me as barebones advice for newcomers to the profession, and a tad repetitive. Ms. Tess Whitty's blog, she being a professional marketer, does not interest me in the least, as I'm no salesman or marketer. I have y... I have yet to read Ms. Suriá's blog but she's well regarded by some of my colleagues in the twittersphere.
I have a modest blog myself, which I write to express my own ideas and opinionated conclusions I've arrived about translation-related issues and areas over the decades. I have a handful of followers, but I don't blog to be followed or to sell my services. If someone, client or colleague, find a particular post of mine useful, great. If not, that's okay. Proper blogging, for me, is like writing literary pieces or poems.
I have used others' blogs and my own blog postings as tools to teach translation students. I do remember one student commenting that my blog was just a pile of chatter (he used an expression my memory fails to remember). That's okay! That student didn't like my way of teaching, and that was fine too. ▲ Collapse

Now, If you are talking about "bloggers-translators", I must say that a blog shouldn't promote your work: A website yes, not a blog.
